Aston Martin gaat met geld smijten: "We gaan nieuwe windtunnel bouwen, ondanks verbod vanaf 2030"

Aston Martin gaat door met de bouw van hun nieuwe windtunnel, ondanks dat ze tegen 2030 niet meer zullen worden toegestaan. Eerder in mei werd bekend dat 8 van de huidige 10 Formule 1-teams voorstander zijn van het afschaffen van het gebruik van windtunnels in de sport.

De tijd die in de windtunnel wordt doorgebracht, wordt steeds kostbaarder met teams die nu beperkt zijn in hoeveel tijd ze daar doorbrengen, afhankelijk van hoe goed ze presteren in het constructeurkampioenschap. Hoe hoger een team finisht, hoe minder tijd ze krijgen om hun auto daar te ontwikkelen.

Onderscheidende factor

Er is echter een wens van een meerderheid van de Formule 1-teams om windtunnels volledig af te schaffen, maar ondanks dat is Aston Martin bereid om hun middelen te besteden aan een gloednieuwe, die op dit moment ontworpen wordt.

"We zijn momenteel plannen aan het maken om een tunnel te bouwen", zei Aston Martin-teambaas Otmar Szafnauer. "Aerodynamica is nog steeds een grote onderscheidende factor in onze sport en het hebben van een eigen windtunnel is voordelig, of het niet hebben van een eigen tunnel kan nadelig zijn. Misschien is dat de juiste manier om het te zeggen."

"Dus op dit moment overwegen we serieus de bouw van een nieuwe windtunnel en we zullen er waarschijnlijk binnenkort mee beginnen."

"Tot aan 2030 is er nog een behoorlijke periode om gebruik te maken van een nieuwe windtunnel. We zitten nu in 2021, dus stel dat we tegen het midden van 2023 onze nieuwe windtunnel in gebruik hebben, is er nog zes en een half jaar om hem te gebruiken. Dat zou de moeite waard zijn."

Windtunnel hoeft niet alleen voor de F1 gebruikt te worden. Kan ook voor anderen race klassen of zelfs straat auto’s gebruikt worden. Dus in dat opzicht is een nieuwe tunnel niet gek.

  Ergens wel vreemd dat dat argument niet gebruikt wordt. tenslotte eindigt het artikel met de zijn dat ze nog zo'n 6,5 jaar gebruik kunnen maken van de tunnel, en dat dat de moeite waard is.

Als de techniek van de windtunnel goed is, kan het een mooie bron van inkomsten worden voor het team. De windtunnel van Toyota bijvoorbeeld wordt door veel partijen ingezet, ook buiten de Formule 1. Toyota zat een aantal jaar geleden op iets van €100.000 per week van windtunnel tests. Kosten zijn niet mals, maar ook buiten de traditionele F1 windtunnel tests kan dit zeker wel nut hebben.

als je nu eigen data op kan bouwen word de cfd ook wat preciezer... en ik denk dat op lange toet stiekem word gedaan onder onder mom scientific wil niet zeggen dat ze hele chassis onder de wind zetten maar stukjes hoe die reageren die kan helpen in cfd....

Tot en 2030 hebben ze gewoon het voordeel dat ze die mogen gebruiken, daarna zal het een extra inkomstenbron worden. Maar het is wel ook zaak dat dadelijk de data van de windtunnel klopt en deze goed verwerkt gaat worden. Ik vraag mij wel af wat het aan kosten met zich meebrengt om de simulaties via computerprogramma's te doen. Want het zal ook zeker niet goedkoop zijn en wat zou het onder de streep opleveren om het via een windtunnel of computer te doen?

Mclaren heeft onlangs ook een nieuwe state of the art windtunnel geïnstalleerd. Gezien de restricties in aantal uren gaat men die zeker voor andere doeleinden ook inzetten.

Het blijft een behoorlijke investering die weinigen maken als ze daar geen grote (lees volle) bezetting voor hebben. Zowel McLaren als Aston kunnen het oa gebruiken voor hun eigen "roadcars" maar daarnaast zullen nog wel derden daar gebruik van maken.
