Daniel Ricciardo crasht tijdens kwalificatie: "Voel mij niet fijn, maar het gebeurt"

Daniel Ricciardo was dit weekend goed onderweg in Bakoe en leek zijn teamgenoot Lando Norris beter bij te benen dan tijdens de eerdere races dit seizoen. Tot hij crashte tijdens de kwalificatie.

“Ik voel mij niet geweldig, maar het gebeurt, het is een stratencircuit”, vertelt de Australische McLaren-coureur.

Hij vervolgt: "Dat was frusterend maar ik zal toch de limiet blijven opzoeken. Ik heb wat meer werk te doen morgen, maar hopelijk is de auto niet al te erg gehavend en hopelijk zullen de gasten het niet te laat moeten maken vanavond."

Het is de tweede race op een rij dat Ricciardo het niet voor elkaar krijgt om zijn McLaren door het tweede deel van de kwalificatie te krijgen richting de top-tien. Ricciardo zat dicht tegen een klassering in de top-tien aan, maar het was sowieso de vraag geweest of hij daar zou zijn gekomen als hij niet zou zijn gecrasht

Ricciardo: "Ik zat er dicht bij. Ik had wat issues tijdens mijn eerste geklokte ronde om een snelle tijd te noteren. Door alle gele en rode vlaggen waren wij min of meer genoodzaakt om die eerste ronde goed te laten zijn."

Ricciardo hoopt dat zijn auto hem morgen de kans geeft om aan te vallen tijdens de race. Ricciardo: "Als je een snelle auto hebt kun je inhalen, dan kun je dingen doen, dus ik ben er klaar voor om het gevecht aan te gaan morgen."

Leek zijn teamgenoot beter bij te benen? Hij lag er weer dik achter, en op dat moment 12e.

Met heel veel pijn moet ik constateren dat, tot dusver, Ricciardo de grootste teleurstelling bij McLaren is sinds Montoya in 2005.

Ik hoop dat hij het tij spoedig kan keren.

  Alonso was een teleurstelling op andere facetten, niet om zijn prestaties op de baan.
  
  Wat betreft Perez, hij kwam destijds natuurlijk met heel andere verwachtingen binnen. Perez was de onervaren coureur die aan zijn 3e seizoen ging beginnen en nog alles te bewijzen had. Ricciardo kwam dit jaar binnen als een gevestigde naam, meervoudig GP winnaar en iemand die tot de absolute top wordt gerekend (achter Hamilton, Verstappen en Leclerc). Verwachtingspatroon tussen Perez destijds en Ricciardo dit jaar is daarom ook volkomen verschillend.
