Statistiek: Is Formule 2 de ideale kweekvijver voor de F1?

De Formule 2 speelt sinds 2017 een belangrijke rol in de doorstroming van jonge coureurs naar de Formule 1. De opstapklasse organiseerde in Bakoe haar 100ste F2-race. Een goed moment om het nut van de Formule 2 in kaart te brengen.

F1-teambazen nemen F2 serieus

Charles Leclerc (2017), George Russell (2018), Nyck de Vries (2019) en Mick Schumacher (2020) werden kampioen in de Formule 2. Op De Vries na, zijn allen actief in de Formule 1.

Dat een titel niet altijd nodig is om te promoveren naar de koningsklasse bewezen Lando Norris, Alexander Albon, Yuki Tsunoda en Nikita Mazepin met hun overstap naar de koningsklasse. Bij Mazepin moet wel een kanttekening geplaatst worden. De Rus is niet alleen op basis van zijn prestaties de F1 binnen gekomen, maar ook vanwege de centjes van zijn steenrijke vader.

In bovenstaand lijstje mist alleen nog de naam van Jack Aitken. De Brit heeft één Grand Prix achter zijn naam. Aitken mocht invallen bij Williams tijdens de GP van Sakhir in 2020. Hij verving daar George Russell, die op zijn beurt Lewis Hamilton verving bij Mercedes. De zevenvoudig wereldkampioen kon niet racen vanwege corona.

Deze acht rijders scoorden samen in de hoogste autosportklasse 845 punten, 17 podia, 8 poles en 2 zeges. Het grootste aandeel komt van Ferrari-coureur Charles Leclerc. Hoewel Russell en Norris op papier minder presteerden vanwege minder materiaal, staat hun talent niet ter discussie.

Een moordende en sterke competitie

In de 100 verreden races, waren er 31 verschillende winnaars. Daarmee is de F2 een van de meeste competitieve openwielkampioenschappen ter wereld.

De zeven zeges van Russell en Leclerc in één seizoen is dan ook extra knap. Hiermee lieten beide jongelingen zien over veel talent te beschikken.

De Vries en Artem Markelov behaalden in totaal acht overwinningen, maar verzamelden die over meerdere seizoenen.

Juri Vips is de 31ste coureur die op de hoogste trede van het podium stond. Dat gebeurde tijdens de jubileumrace in Bakoe.

Hieronder nog meer feitjes en weetjes na 100 verreden F2-races:

- 72 rijders hebben gereden in de F2
- 60 rijders scoorden punten
- 41 rijders scoorden minimaal een podium
- 18 rijders scoorden minimaal een poleposition
- 29 verschillende nationaliteiten waren vertegenwoordigd
- De F2 reisde af naar 15 verschillende locaties
- Leclerc heeft de meeste poles met acht, voor de Vries met zeven en Callum Ilott met zes
- Russell scoorde de meeste punten met 287, voor Leclerc met 282 en De Vries met 266
- De Vries en Markelov wonnen het meest met acht zeges, Leclerc en Russell volgen met zeven

Dat veel rijders punten en podia scoorden heeft te maken met de reverse-grid-regel bij beide sprintraces. Dit zorgt ervoor dat meer coureurs de kans krijgen op punten en een topdrieklassering. Bij de hoofdrace wordt niet gesleuteld aan de startvolgorde.

Mooi verhaal en sowieso leuk dat er aandacht is voor de F2. Ik moet wel zeggen dat ik nog allerminst overtuigd ben van het nieuwe format; drie races is érg eentonig (zeker icm minder circuits) en ik heb nu nog geen enkele maal in het weekend de tijd gehad om het allemaal te volgen. Wat mij betreft snel maar terug naar het overzichtelijke Q/Feature/Sprint-format.

Miss is het een leuk idee om een keer een terugblik te houden op het GP2-tijdperk: beginnend bij het ter ziele gaan van de F3000 en eindigend bij de naamwisseling naar F2.

Er was toen gewoon een tijd dat de World Series by Renault 3.5 gewoon de betere coureurs aan wist te trekken; dat vond ik een interessante rivaliteit. Uiteindelijk is de WSR om redenen die mij niet geheel duidelijk zijn (ik geloof dat de geldstroom vanuit Renault werd teruggeschroefd) in korte tijd erg achteruit gegaan en na een seizoen vol B-garnituur gestaakt.

  Mooi idee. De F3000 valt bij mij onder de categorie "mooi was die tijd".
  
  De WSR is ook wat onderuit getackeled door de FIA. Je krijgt als kampioen maar 20 punten terwijl de F3 al meer waard is. Coureurs werden min of meer gedwongen om zo de F3 - F2 - F1 route te bewandelen.

  Die 'aanbesteding' van het F2-project aan de GP2 sloeg ook nergens op. Een beetje alsof de NS hier in Nederland geheel verrassend de aanbesteding mbt een bepaalde stuk spoorweg wint. Dat soort zaken lijken voor mij als buitenstaander meer weg te hebben van rituele dansjes dan van de eerlijke en transparante procedures die zij pretenderen te zijn.

Vroeger, in mijn tijd, reed de F2 nog mee met de F1.
Was om een volledig startveld te krijgen.

Toch vind ik het jammer dat Max nooit in de F2 heeft gereden.
Doordat bij de F2 heeft overgeslagen blijft het toch lastig inschatten op welk niveau hij nou zit.

Met de F2 (GP2) zit het wel prima. Alleen al het feit dat de laatste 6 wereldkampioenschappen zijn gewonnen door een oud GP2 coureur zegt alles al natuurlijk. :-)
