"We gaan het helemaal anders doen", is een vaak gehoorde term zodra een nieuwe manager zich ingewerkt heeft in een bedrijf. Bij het Formule 1-team van Williams is dat niet anders.

Het Williams F1-team moet totaal binnenstebuiten worden gekeerd en alles moet opnieuw worden opgebouwd voordat het weer serieus kan meestrijden in de Formule 1.

Dat zegt de nieuwe technisch directeur Francois-Xavier Demaison. 'FX' werd in maart aangesteld door de nieuwe teambaas en Jost Capito. Hij kent 'FX' nog uit zijn tijd als collega bij Volkswagen en haalde hem binnen bij Williams.

Sinds hij aan het werk is, heeft Demaison zich verdiept in de huidige activiteiten van Williams. Het Franse Auto Hebdo schrijft nu dat Demaison zegt: "Williams kan niet op dezelfde manier blijven functioneren."

Vorig jaar verliet de familie Williams de Formule 1 en verkocht het team aan het onbekende Dorilton Capital. Zij zijn een in New York gevestigd particuliere investeringsmaatschappij.

Demaison heeft nu vanuit technisch oogpunt de zware taak om te voorkomen dat Williams ook in de toekomst nog langer moet racen vanaf de laatste plaatsen op de startgrid.

"Focus op efficientie"

"In Grove zijn veel mensen die al heel lang samenwerken. Alles is om hen heen gebouwd. Als iemand die van buitenaf is gekomen, was het voor mij gemakkelijk om de gaten op te vullen met een focus op efficiëntie. Zonder het verleden uit te wissen, is er veel te veranderen."

Hij vervolgt: "Wij doen al 20 jaar hetzelfde en dat moet veranderen. Wat 20 jaar geleden werkte, werkt niet meer, vooral in de Formule 1", voegde Demaison eraan toe.

Formule 1 ontwikkelt sneller dan Williams F1-team

"Het grote probleem is dat Williams niet in hetzelfde tempo is geëvolueerd als de Formule 1. De sport is erg complex geworden, maar het lijkt erop dat sommige mensen die complexiteit gebruiken om elkaar te beschermen. Voor hen is het een grote cultuurverandering", benadrukte hij.

"Ervaring is belangrijk en kan niet worden gekocht, maar moet toch verstandig worden gebruikt. In veel opzichten denk ik dat Williams nog steeds in de schaduw staat van de dood van Ayrton Senna."

Bij besluit vertelt Demaison: "In Grove moet een auto veilig zijn voordat hij snel kan zijn, maar het moet eigenlijk allebei zijn."

Bianchi reed met dik 230km/h op een zeiknatte baan door ondanks dubbel geel en heeft voor deze kapitale inschattingsfout de hoogste prijs moeten betalen helaas. Die Marussia op de open laad... Misschien off topic maar na Senna's dood zijn er tal van reglementswijzigingen geweest omtrent de veiligheid. Is er eigenlijk iets veranderd na de crash van Grosjean vorig jaar? Het was meer geluk dan wijsheid dat hij daar levend uitkwam. Het was toch bizar dat in de huidige tijd een auto nog zo kan exploderen?

  Goede vraag, bij mijn weten niet. Het is natuurlijk wel iets dat zo uitzonderlijk is dat het waarschijnlijk niet meer voorkomt, maar dat was in het verleden ook vaak het geval. Ik heb er geen zicht op of dit soort ontploffingen überhaupt te voorkomen zijn. Er zit nu eenmaal een hoop brandbare vloeistof in dat ding vlak na de start. In de meest ongunstige omstandigheden zal dat altijd mis kunnen gaan lijkt mij.

  het was een heel bizarre happening, in al die jaren dat ik F1 volgde heb ik maar 1x zoiets eerder gezien en dat was eind jaren '80 met Gerhard Berger in Imola. Ik was verbaast dat zoiets nog steeds kon gebeuren

  @Joeppp ik geloof dat er wat (kleine) wijzigingen zijn gekomen in de voorschriften voor de tankinstallatie (de doorvoeren, kleppen en tankomhulling/-wandmaterialen).

  Jules Bianchi was ook exact op het verkeerde moment op de verkeerde plek. Net als die dame die in een Virgin haar oog voorloor door een laadklep. Of was dat Bianchi? In elk geval waren beide situaties er 2 waar je nooit op kunt rekenen of een wagen bouwen die er tegen kan. Het hoeft maar net de juiste hoek te zijn qua crash wat fataal is of een schrammetje. Was Senna met de zijkant als eerst gecrashed dan had ie het overleeft gok ik.

Die Marussia op de open laadklep is pure domme pech omdat een of andere lulhannes dat ding niet dichtgedaan heeft. Op ooghoogte zie je m echt niet in een F1. Grosjean maakte zelf een klein foutje (wat iedereen had kunnen overkomen) en klapte onder de meest ongelukkige hoek in die vangrail die de energie ook niet kwijt kon. Botte pech. Geluk; dankzij zHalo of HANS en de strenge eisen hoe snel je uit je auto moet kunnen klimmen leeft Romain nog. Pre Halo was ie simpelweg onthoofd, je moet er niet aan denken, pure horror.
