Lewis Hamilton enthousiast over sprintrace: "Maar we moeten aan onze starts werken"

Lewis Hamilton zal niet met al te veel plezier terugkijken op zijn allereerste F1 sprintkwalificatie ooit. De Brit had de ultieme uitgangspositie om de eerste sprintrace in de Formule 1-geschiedenis te winnen en zijn uitmuntende kwalificatie gisteravond om te zetten in zijn 101^ste pole position, maar moest na een slechte start Max Verstappen voorbij laten. Nadat de Brit in de eerste ronde nog twee speldenprikjes kon uitdelen in een poging de eerste plek terug te pakken, bleek de combinatie Red Bull en Verstappen toch weer het snelst.

Hamilton was dan ook teleurgesteld tijdens de post-kwalificatie interviews: “Ik heb alles gegeven en ik wil eerst de fans bedanken, want het is bijna niet te bevatten hoeveel energie zij mij geven en hun support betekent alles voor me. Maar ik moet me verontschuldigen dat het niet gelukt is om die zege te pakken in de eerste sprint. Morgen is er een nieuwe kans, maar het is nooit goed als je vanaf P1 verliest en we moeten proberen dit negatieve in positiviteit om te zetten."

Op de vraag of hij zich zorgen maakte dat hij een punt verloren had antwoordde de zevenvoudig wereldkampioen: "Elk punt telt en morgen proberen we het opnieuw. Red Bull was echter zo sterk en reden gewoon weg tijdens de race en ik kon echt niks doen om bij te blijven. Zij hebben echt geweldig werk verricht aan hun motor en flink wat performance gewonnen bij de starts, dus daar moeten we echt aan werken.”

Over het format van dit weekend was Hamiltion echter enthousiast: "Ik weet niet hoe het was om te kijken voor de fans, maar het was zo leuk om de kwalificatie op vrijdag te hebben en maakte de vrijdag veel mooier. Ik weet niet of dit de meest memorabele race ooit was, maar we moeten dit zeker blijven doen met misschien wat kleine aanpassingen."

Lewis en Mercedes lopen echt op hun laatste tandvlees om Max en RBR bij te benen dit seizoen. Eerst was er flexwinggate, daarna draggate, nu is er startgate. What's next? Colgate?

Uiteraard werden de fans weer uitvoerig bedankt maar verder niks mis met de reactie van Lewis.

Behalve dat de starts van RB zijn verbeterd vertelde Hamilton ook nog dat de starts van Mercedes juist wat minder zijn geworden.

  Hamilton heeft het hele jaar nog geen plek verloren bij de start. Nu heeft hij, en hij alleen, een slechte start. En dan heeft RB ineens gewonnen en moeten 'we' aan onze starts werken.

  Well said Tieske, het moet niet gekker worden inderdaad. Hoe kan je een slechte start nou ook weer bij het team ('we') leggen? Ben je als rijder straks nergens meer verantwoordelijk voor? Maar als het goed gaat wel lekker strijken met de eer.

Vond het maar lala, de regie liet 90% Alonso zien die alleen maar plekken verloor na een sublieme start. Mag van mij verdwijnen.

  Nee joh, Alonso is juist een enorme aanwinst. De kans dat hij volgend seizoen met al zijn ervaring prima overweg kan met de nieuwe auto schat ik dan ook hoog in.

Opeens moet Mercedes aan de start werken volgens Lewis.
Terwijl Bottas ook een prima start had en zelfs inhield na de eerste bocht om Lewis voor te laten.
