Kimi Raikkonen nonchalant over vervanger "Niet mijn probleem"

Kimi Raikkonen zegt dat het hem niet uitmaakt wie hem vervangt als Alfa Romeo besluit zijn contract niet te verlengen.

Met zijn 41 jaar is de Fin de oudste coureur op de huidige F1-grid en hij is ook de langst zittende F1-coureur ooit. Dit jaar wordt hij om de oren gereden door zijn teamgenoot Antonio Giovinazzi, bovendien wordt Raikkonen nogal bekritiseerd om fouten, zoals de crash die hij in de laatste ronde veroorzaakte tijdens de Grand Prix van Oostenrijk op de Red Bull Ring.

Silly season

De geruchtenmolen draait op hogere toeren dan de gemiddelde hybride-krachtbron. Zo zouden Valtteri Bottas en Mick Schumacher kans maken op het stoeltje van Raikkonen in 2022. Ook Academy-coureurs zoals Callum Ilott zouden kunnen worden opgesteld voor 2022.

Sport1 stelt Raikkonen een vraag die velen bezig houdt: wat doet Kimi Raikkonen volgend jaar?

"Ik weet het eerlijk gezegd nog niet", antwoordt de Finse coureur.

"Vorig jaar was het ook hetzelfde rond deze tijd. We zullen zien. Ik ben in ieder geval niet geïnteresseerd in het verlengen van mijn (race)record. Alle records worden op een gegeven moment verbroken. Daarom heb ik daar niet echt een speciaal gevoel bij."

Als Raikkonen toch vertrekt, is de algehele verwachting dat Ferrari Haas-rookie Mick Schumacher voor 2022 naar Alfa Romeo kan promoveren.

Kimi zegt dat het moeilijk in te schatten is hoe goed de 22-jarige zoon van zijn voormalige rivaal en F1-legende Michael Schumacher het tot nu toe doet in de Formule 1. Onlangs zei Bernie Ecclestone dat Mick Schumacher een slechte maatstaf mist in zijn teamgenoot Nikita Mazepin. Volgens Ecclestone is het daarom moeilijk te beoordelen hoe goed Schumacher het nu doet.

Raikkonen kan daar wel in mee komen, maar noemt daarbij vooral de auto als oorzaak dat de jonge Schumacher lastig te peilen valt. "Het is moeilijk voor hem om te schitteren omdat de auto niet erg snel is", zei de Fin.

"Tegelijkertijd is dat ook wel goed voor hem, omdat mensen weten dat de auto niet goed is. Dus als hij nog steeds sterke races rijdt en zijn snelheid laat zien, is dat positief voor hem.

"Hij staat onder veel druk met de naam, maar een slechte auto geeft hem een gemakkelijkere start omdat de verwachtingen laag zijn. Het geeft hem meer tijd om dingen te leren", voegde Raikkonen eraan toe.

Hoogtijdagen

Kimi Raikkonen beleefde in zijn hoogtijdagen gevechten met Michael Schumacher en Jos Verstappen, in 2021 rijdt hij op de circuits en neemt hij het op tegen Mick Schumacher en Max Verstappen. Op de vraag of hij zich nu niet erg oud voelt aangezien hij ook nog tegen de vaders van zijn rivalen Schumacher en Verstappen heeft gereden, lacht Raikkonen: "Nee, helemaal niet."

"Ik voel mij soms oud als ik 's ochtends wakker word, maar niet in de racewagen op het circuit."

Als hem wordt gevraagd of hij denkt dat Mick Schumacher een goede opvolger zou zijn bij Alfa Romeo, geeft Raikkonen toe: "Als ik besluit te stoppen, maakt het mij echt niet uit wie de auto bestuurt."

"Dat is niet mijn probleem", zo besluit de Fin.
