Imola wil een meerjarige deal sluiten om weer vaste prik op de F1-kalender te worden: met of zonder pandemie. De baan waar vroeger steevast de Grand Prix van San Marino werd verreden, bood de Formule 1 onderdak ten tijde van de wereldwijd om zich heen grijpende covidpandemie. Ook in 2021 sleept de pandemie zich nog altijd voort en biedt Imola solaas bij het organiseren van een Formule 1 Grand Prix. Ook dit jaar vond de F1 zijn toevlucht in het 61 km² grote landje San Marino dat altijd een enclave was omringd door Italië. De historische baan werd toneel van een vervangende GP, een race die bovendien in korte tijd kon woren overeen gekomen.

Het Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari wil ook in de toekomst een vaste prik zijn op de F1-kalender, ongeacht of er zich nu een pandemie voortsleept of niet. De baan was tussen 1981 en 2006 onafgebroken op de F1-kalender aanwezig als Grand Prix van republiek San Marino.

Imola wil meer dan gatenvuller zijn

Het legendarische asfalt verdient meer dan allen maar te dienen als gatenvuller vanwege de pandemie. Dat beweert althans de president van de regio Emilia-Romagna Stefano Bonaccini. Hij geeft toe inderdaad te mikken op een volledige terugkeer op de jaarlijkse F1-kalender.

De president van de regio zegt dat het doel is om volgend jaar weer een volwaardige Grand Prix te organiseren, maar dan moet het een race zijn mét publiek op de tribunes, zo stelt Bonaccini. "Ik denk aan hoe het zou zijn geweest met het publiek", vertelde hij aan de krant Il Resto del Carlino.

"We hopen het wereldkampioenschap hier naar huis te kunnen halen met daarbij een gevaccineerd publiek, voor een aantal jaren, misschien drie. Het is een sociaal-, gezondheids- en gemeenschapsproblemen waar wij steeds beter in worden."

Volgens geruchten zou de F1-wereld wel zin hebben om jaarlijks terug te keren naar het legendarische asfalt in de voormalige enclave, omringd door Italiaans grondgebied. De jaarlijkse 23 miljoen euro die benodigd zou zijn voor het organiseren, zou echter de bottleneck zijn, zo wordt gedacht.

Geen miljoenen, geen handtekening

Tegelijkertijd is het een feit dat er nog geen handtekening op papier staat voor een dergelijke meerderjarige overeenkomst tussen de F1 en de organisatoren in Imola. De president kijkt dan ook al een aantal maanden veelvuldig naar zijn telefoon. Tevergeefs.

"Ik wacht tot ze mij bellen om de deal voor de komende jaren te sluiten."

Tot op heden is hij dus nog niet gebeld, vertelt hij in de krant.

'Attent'

"Niet iedereen is zo attent als de (Italiaanse) minister Luigi di Maio", zegt Bonaccini.

"Zelf had ik mijn twijfels, maar ik begrijp dat hij de komende jaren elk jaar de miljoenen euro's wil neertellen", zo beweert hij.

"Hij wil dat de F1 nog jaren in Imola blijft, omdat de Grand Prix ook is gewijd aan 'Made in Italy' en niet alleen aan Emilia-Romagna."

  Mwa, ik zou meer pleiten voor Mugello eigenlijk. Imola heeft een mooie sfeer maar qua circuit biedt het heel weinig inhaalmogelijkheden en zijn de races op zondag eigenlijk best saai. Mugello heeft minder F1 historie natuurlijk, maar kan imo veel leukere races bieden. Wat is belangrijker?
