Toto Wolff: "Teams die zich niet focussen op 2022 hebben een toverstaf nodig"

Toto Wolff zegt dat alle F1-teams die zich nog steeds toeleggen op het ontwikkelen van de wagen van 2021, een toverstaf nodig hebben om de achterstand voor 2022 in te halen. Volgend seizoen introduceert de Formule 1 geheel nieuwe auto's, inclusief aerodynamica met grondeffect om de kwaliteit van het racen te verbeteren.

Een model van de nieuwe auto werd eerder deze maand tentoongesteld op het circuit van Silverstone, waar het heel duidelijk was dat de auto een heel ander uiterlijk krijgt dan de auto's waar op dit moment mee gereden wordt.

Mercedes legt focus op 2022

Als zodanig hebben veel van de teams hun volledige aandacht al gericht op de auto van volgend jaar, waarbij Haas niet eens de moeite neemt om de auto van dit jaar te upgraden, omdat het hoopt door alle aandacht op de wagen van 2022 te richten, het beter voor de dag komt en weer in het middenveld kan strijden om de punten.

Maar voor teams als Mercedes en Red Bull Racing is het een heel ander verhaal met Hamilton en Verstappen die strijden om het kampioenschap. Mercedes introduceerde een groot aantal updates tijdens de Britse Grand Prix, waarbij Wolff destijds zei dat dit de laatste van het seizoen zou zijn.

Hij zegt dat dit komt omdat het tijd is dat Mercedes zich op 2022 gaat concentreren: "Je moet ook naar 2022 kijken, want tenzij je een toverstaf hebt, begin je volgend seizoen met een achterstand. Dus ik geloof dat de meeste teams de ontwikkeling voor 2021 hebben stopgezet, maar als ze blijven pushen voor 2021, zal dat dit jaar zeker nog een voordeel op gaan leveren."

Verder is het zonde, Maar ik heb de titel opgegeven voor Max na gisteren. Dan kan het alleen nog maar meevallen. De Mercedes is nog steeds de allerbeste wagen. Dat zie je vooral aan de 2e man. Max kan veel maar tegen een wagen als de Mercedes ben je kansloos. er moet echt een wonder nodig zijn om de titelm te winnen.

Mercedes gaat redelijk simpel beide titels winnen, En ook volgend jaar zullen ze gewoon weer het sterkste team zijn. Al verwacht ik ook veel van Ferrari en Mclaren. RB zal wel weer ruk uit de startblokken komen, Maar het is ook geen schande om een Max te zien rijden die veel moet inhalen ;)

  Het seizoen is nog heel lang, en ondanks hun dominante auto is Mercedes niet ongenaakbaar en zeker niet onverslaanbaar…
  
  Toto kunnen we al tijden niet meer serieus nemen, laat staan echt geloven in z’n berichtgeving. Dus hop, over een paar uur racen, niks geen damagecontrol, maar gewoon gas op die lolly!
  Lewis mag eerste paar meters heel goed achterom kijken. Héél goed…

  De titel opgegeven en een wonder nodig? Volgens mij zijn de wagens gelijkwaardiger dan ooit. De ene race is de red bull net iets beter, de andere mercedes. Het is nog steeds super spannend zo halverwege het seizoen.
  
  Over 2022 is nog weinig zinnigs te zeggen. Zou wel leuk zijn als Ferrari en McLarren kunnen aansluiten bij de top

Och, als de auto volgend jaar niet goed is, dat is ie wel, dan toveren we toch gewoon de WK leider de muur in. Zo moeilijk is het allemaal niet totootje.

Vanuit zijn positie is het logisch dat Wolff hier de aandacht op blijft vestigen. De zogenaamde mineure regelwijziging heeft er immers voor gezorgd dat het sublieme W11-concept (met stip één van mijn all-time favorite F1-wagens) ernstig op de schop moest en Mercedes bij aanvang van 2021 tegen een achterstand ten opzichte van Red Bull aankeek - al moet worden gezegd dat de Red Bull eind 2020 minimaal net zo goed, zo niet beter was.

Maar nu de strijd om de 2021-titel spannender is dan voorzien, iets wat ook de regelmakers van de FIA zal hebben verrast, staat Mercedes voor een ernstig dilemma. De vraag is waar hij op aanstuurt: een verhoging van het budget, een ontwikkelstop voor de rest van het seizoen of hoopt hij met Red Bull tot een vergelijk te komen. Dat eerste en laatste optie lijken me uitgesloten, de tweede optie is weliswaar niet in de geest van de sport, maar in de gegeven omstandigheden niet onbegrijpelijk.
