Winnaarsmentaliteit Vettel komt boven drijven: "Ik was zó dichtbij de overwinning"

Sebastian Vettel zag ronden lang de overwinning vlak voor zijn neus, maar wist het niet te grijpen. De Aston Martin-coureur komt een fractie tekort en kan niet voorbij komen aan Fransman Esteban Ocon.

Ocon komt na een knotsgekke race als eerste over de streep en behaalt een historische eerste overwinning in de F1, voor hemzelf maar ook voor Alpine. Vettel komt over de finish gestormd en via de boordradio klinkt zijn teleurstelling.

Het team van Vettel is echter dolblij blijkt als de monteurs juichend richting het podium rennen.

Vettel: "Oh, man, ik heb het geprobeerd, de hele race. Mán, volgen is zó moeilijk, maar wij waren sneller. Ik was zó dichtbij. Waaaah, sorry jongens", zo antwoordt Vettel nadat hij wordt gefeliciteerd door zijn team.

Vettel feliciteert Esteban Ocon met zijn overwinning en vertelt - vanachter een mondkapje in de kleuren van de regenboog - tegen Johnny Herbert: "Ik ben een beetje teleurgesteld, want ik was wel wat sneller had ik het idee, maar Esteban maakte geen enkele fout. Ik kwam echter niet dichtbij genoeg, het is geen makkelijk circuit om in te halen, maar ik heb het echt constant geprobeerd. Hij bleef op de baan en verdient deze overwinning die zijn eerste is. Als je zo dichtbij is zit wil je natuurlijk gewoon winnen."

Vettel neemt de kijkers mee terug naar zijn start. "Ik had een hele slechte start, maar dat bleek juist de beste plek waar ik mij maar kon bevinden. Er gebeurde van alles in de eerste bocht, ik kon binnendoor en was ineens derde. Wij zaten heel dichtbij Esteban wat betreft de snelheid, ik zette hem onder druk maar hij maakte geen fouten."

Ik hoop echt dat 2022 dit oplost.

Gewoon blij zijn met deze wat gelukkige 2e plaats. Ben wel blij dat een race als deze wordt gewonnen door een 'nieuweling'. Hopelijk gaat de budgetcap zn werk doen en kunnen dit soort gasten en teams in de toekomst ook gewoon op eigen kracht mee doen voor de overwinning.
