Renault wil door met V6-motoren in Formule 1

Renault heeft zich uitgesproken tegen voorstellen om de basis V6-architectuur van Formule 1-motoren voor de nieuwe periode na 2025-2026 te schrappen.

Red Bull, die vanaf volgend jaar Honda's motoractiviteiten overneemt, stuurt aan op een "volledig nieuwe motor". Het zou ook een poging zijn om de steun van Volkswagen aan te trekken.

"MGU-H nutteloos voor straatauto's"

"Wij zijn voorstander van een volledig nieuwe motor, omdat de intellectuele rechten op de Honda in 2025 aflopen", vertelde Dr. Helmut Marko aan Speed Week. "Wij zijn tegen de kostbare inkrimping van de huidige motor en tegen de MGU-H, die nutteloos is voor straatauto's."

Volgens geruchten zouden Red Bull, VW en ook Ferrari neigen naar een concept met een viercilindermoto. Helmut Marko zei dat het belangrijkste is dat de 2025-krachtbron hoog toeren maakt en dat de motoren forse geluiden produceren om te racen". Hij denkt ook dat de nieuwe motorformule "minder dan 100 miljoen per jaar en minder dan een miljoen per eenheid" moet kosten.

Huidige krachtbronnen veel te kostbaar

"De huidige motoren zitten daar ruim boven", aldus de Oostenrijker. "Er moet ook op kosten worden bespaard door standaardisatie van turboladers, KERS, batterijen enzovoort." Marko maakt er geen geheim van dat de "Volkswagen Group betrokken is bij de gesprekken met een focus op één merk", waarbij de volgende ontmoetingen naar verluidt plaatsvinden in Monza.

Ferrari zou ook voor een viercilinder zijn

Fascinerend genoeg steunt Ferrari ook het idee van een geheel nieuwe motor, met een bron bij Maranello die tegen Auto Motor und Sport zegt: "We staan open voor een nieuwe start met een viercilinder". Er wordt aangenomen dat het Red Bull-VW-Ferrari-concept ook open staat voor vierwielaandrijving, maar Renault en Mercedes staan daar duidelijk tegenover.

"Het heeft voor ons weinig zin om met een concept te komen waarbij drie bedrijven worden verkocht om een nieuwe te krijgen", zegt technisch baas Marcin Budkowski van Alpine. "Als we CO2-neutrale brandstof hebben, hebben we geen viercilinder nodig", benadrukt hij. "Waarom het wiel opnieuw uitvinden?"

Budkowski zei ook dat het idee van vierwielaandrijving "enorme aanpassingen aan de auto, meer gewicht en meer kosten" zou betekenen.

Het is een illusie om te denken dat e-fuels de gewone brandstof die we nu gebruiken kan vervangen vanwege de hoeveelheid energie die de produktie hiervan kost maar een combinatie met elektrische ondersteuning zou goed kunnen.

Ik ben het wel grotendeels eens met Budkowski. Inzetten op synthetische brandstof heeft meer prioriteit dan bijv. vierwielaandrijving. Hier worden de auto’s naar mijn mening veel te log en lomp door.
Bijkomend voordeel is dat door meer te focussen op synthetische brandstof er minder elektrische ondersteuning nodig is om toch duurzaam te zijn en de techniek dus ook relevant kan zijn voor straatauto’s. Plus dat de motor an sich ook minder complex wordt vanwege het wegvallen van de elektrische techniek?
Dat laatste zeg ik met een vraagteken omdat mijn technische kennis hiervoor niet ver genoeg reikt.

Ook weer typisch weer bij de Fabrikanten die verdeeldheid. Van de hybride systemen stappen ze sowieso niet af. Mijn voorstel is een grotendeels standaard motor op synthetische brandstoffen met een grote rol voor de MGU-k waar fabrikanten een vrije rol hebben qua ontwerp.

De laatste waarvan je zou verwachten om akkoord te gaan met een 4 cilinder is toch wel Ferrari.
Een 4 cilinder in een "gewone" straatauto van hen zal niet populair zijn volgens mij.
