Daniel Ricciardo krijgt"kippenvel" terugdenkend aan gevechten Schumacher: "Michael is god"

Daniel Ricciardo is één van de coureurs op de huidige F1-grid die nog heeft geracet tegen Michael Schumacher. De Australiër vertelt altijd "kippenvel" te krijgen als hij terugdenkt aan die eerste duels op de baan die hij had met de grote Michael Schumacher.

"Volkomen surrealistisch"

"Ik herinner mij een van mijn eerste races, in Suzuka, daar had ik een kort duel met hem. Het was een klein kat-en-muisspel op de baan, en dat was volkomen onwerkelijk. Ik heb van elke seconde genoten", blikte Ricciardo terug in gesprek met de krant Sport Bild.

"Michael is god"

De huidige McLaren-coureur vertelt verder: "Michael heeft al zeven wereldtitels gehad, hij is de god van deze sport. Na de race nam mijn vader mij apart en sprak met mij over het duel. Hij zei: 'Heb je enig idee wat daar zojuist gebeurde?' Dat moest ik eerst even laten bezinken."

Ricciardo is dankbaar voor dat soort bijzondere ervaringen. "Als ik oud ben, denk ik aan precies die dingen terug. Mijn hemel, als ik je er nog een keer over vertel, krijg ik weer kippenvel", aldus de zevenvoudig Grand Prix-winnaar.

Onder de indruk van Mick

Nu hij tegen de zoon van Michael Schumacher racet, heeft hij dan ook goede woorden over voor de verrichtingen van 'de zoon van'.

Ricciardo: "Ik ontmoette Mick in 2016 bij zijn liefdadigheids-voetbalwedstrijd. Op de een of andere manier had ik meteen het gevoel dat ik gewoon aardig tegen hem wilde zijn. Hij zou mijn diepe respect moeten voelen, zijn vader is zo'n legende. Dus er was direct een goede chemie tussen ons, want hij is ook een heel aardige jongen", vertelt Ricciardo.

"Niemand zou moeten denken dat Mick in de Formule 1 zit alleen vanwege zijn naam. Alles wat ik van hem zie, toont aan dat hij zijn plaats hier bij ons verdient. Hij werkt zo hard en ik ben onder de indruk."

Zucht......ik heb enorm veel genoten van de rijkunsten van Michael Schumacher. Hij wordt door sommigen herinnerd vanwege bepaalde onsportieve gedrag op de baan- welke ik overigens afkeur- maar ik herinner mij de beste man als de persoon die samen met Brawn, Byrne en Todt, Ferrari weer naar de top bracht. Wat een geweldige prestatie!!!!!

Niemand is god maar wel goats. Ik kan wel voorstellen dat het voor menig coureur een bijzondere gewaarwording was om tegen een levende legende te races.
Zo praten mede coureurs over prost, senna, schumi en als Lewis gestopt is ook over hem.

  Dat laatste betwijfel ik, ik heb het idee dat de meeste coureurs hem toch minder inschatten als de eerder 3 genoemde. Al blijft het in de F1 natuurlijk redelijk subjectief en meer een mening dan een feit. Immers je kunt de coureurs niet echt met elkaar vergelijken tenzij ze over het zelfde materiaal beschikken. Er zijn ook echte helden met minder of geen titels. Een ding staat wel vast statistisch gezien is Lewis de meest succesvolle coureur aller tijden :)

  Dat is jou mening over hoe de coureurs tegen de mannen opkijken. En als een levende legende stop dan dan wordt hij pas een legende.
  Volgens mij heeft geen enkele coureur geracet tegen senna, prost etc en een enkele tegen schumi.
