Ook McNish onder de indruk van Alonso

De toprace van Fernando Alonso in Hongarije maakt nog steeds veel tongen los. Na een hele rits kenners doet ook Allan McNish nog even een plasje over de prestaties van de Spanjaard.

De Schotse coureur is drievoudig Le Mans-winnaar en reed in 2002 een geheel Formule 1-seizoen in dienst van Toyota. In de F1 Nation Podcast steekt hij zijn bewondering voor Alonso niet onder stoelen of banken: "Het was 18 jaar geleden dat hij zijn eerste Grand Prix won in Hongarije en dat je nu bij hem dezelfde energie, vuur en drive ziet is gewoon extreem indrukwekkend."

McNish geeft aan waarom Alonso's prestaties zo indrukwekkend zijn: "Omdat als je al zo lang in het spel zit en al helemaal op hoog niveau dat een beetje verdwijnt. Het verdwijnt een beetje uit je systeem maar dat is hij hem zeker niet het geval. Hij swingt nog steeds als een 21-jarige." Alonso is inmiddels 40 en weet nog steeds op niveau te presteren en dat lijkt dus indruk te maken.

Het is niet zo dat de Spanjaard stil heeft gezeten sinds zijn vertrek uit de Formule 1 in 2018. In de tussentijd reed Alonso in alles wat los en vast zat. Zo was hij te bewonderen op het asfalt van de Indianapolis Motor Speedway waar hij probeerde de Indy 500 te winnen. Ook reed hij door de duinen van Saoedi-Arabië tijdens de Dakar Rally. Zijn avonturen in andere raceklassen lijken hem als herboren te laten presteren in de Formule 1.

McNish ziet ook dat Alonso alweer op zijn topniveau zit en kijkt daarvoor bijvoorbeeld naar het gevecht met Lewis Hamilton in Hongarije: "De theorie, de strategie, zoals hij deed in de eerste bocht toen hij een foutje maakte. Hij hield toen Lewis op waardoor Lewis geen echte poging kon wagen." Aankomend weekend gaat het Formule 1-seizoen weer verder in België dus het is afwachten of Alonso ook daar weer gaat toveren.

  Er blijven vandaag heel veel berichten kort of lang "hangen" is me opgevallen.
