Dakar: Volkswagen twijfelt ernstig aan deelname in 2012

Nasser Al-Attiyah kan in 2012 zijn overwinning in Le Dakar van dit jaar mogelijk niet verdedigen. Volkswagen treedt in 2013 toe tot het World Rally Championship en het Duitse merk heeft ernstige bedenkingen of het de voorbereidingen daarvoor kan combineren met deelname aan Le Dakar.

Al-Attiyah: “Het lijkt momenteel dat ik volgend jaar niet aan Le Dakar kan meedoen. Ik ga er niet heen zonder mijn engineer en hetzelfde team. Dat zou niet verstandig zijn en ik denk niet dat we in staat zijn om het voor elkaar te krijgen. Jammer, want ik had graag mijn titel willen verdedigen.”

Een bron dicht bij Volkswagen vertrouwde Autosport toe: “Ik denk dat ze zich beginnen te realiseren dat het WRC een enorm programma is en dat deelname aan Le Dakar, zelfs als privé-team met veel fabriekssteun, veel kostbare tijd op zou slokken.”

    Eigenlijk goed nieuws. Zonder de overheersing van Volkswagen kan Dakar wel eens spannend worden. Met mogelijk nederlanders in de top 10.

      Ben ik het niet mee eens...ook voor een Dakar zijn grote teams belangrijk. Grote teams bereiken immers grote groepen fans. Dat bijvoorbeeld Mitsubishi niet meer mee doet als echt fabrieksteam, vind ik ook doodzonde.

    Snap dat dit prettig is, maar als het niet zo kan zijn kan je er toch ook voor kiezen om met een ander team in zee te gaan. Volgens mij doen velen aan Dakar mee omdat ze het ook leuk vinden. Nu zegt Al-Attiyah; Nee ik doe niet mee omdat ik een te grote kans heb dat ik mijn titel ga verliezen terwijl ik mee doe. Komt op mij over om dan later iig te kunnen zeggen dat ie \'niet in staat was om z\'n titel te verdedigen.

    Kijk naar Stéphane Peterhansel, die probeert het nu toch ook in een BMW nadat Mitsubishi ermee gestopt was.

      Peterhansel heeft ook een duidelijke terugval gemaakt. Alles moet nu eenmaal kloppen. Aangezien Al-Attiyah ook in de WRC deelneemt, zou ik me met VW gaan focussen op het WRC.

    Robby Gordon for the victory? In NASCAR bakt hij er geen bal meer van, dus hopelijk verlegd hij de focus volledig naar Dakar.
