Capito: "Een podium is een podium"

Het was een pikzwarte dag voor de sportiviteit van de Formule 1. Maar zo zal het ook hebben gevoeld voor de duizenden fans die in de zeikende regen hebben gestaan. De Belgische Grand Prix was een regelrechte farce. Eigenlijk is er alleen blijdschap bij het team van Williams waar George Russell een tweede plaats pakte.

Na afloop sprak teambaas Jost Capito met de pers: "Ik denk dat de weersomstandigheden zo slecht waren dat het onmogelijk was om een normale race te rijden. Ze hebben er alles aangedaan om de veiligheid van de coureurs te verzekeren en om een uitslag te krijgen."

En een uitslag is er. Allebei de wagens van Williams hebben (halve) punten gescoord en Russell zelfs een podium. En daar is Capito onlangs alles toch best happy mee: "Een podium is een podium. Het team heeft fantastisch werk geleverd en het zou teleurstellend zijn als er geen race zou zijn. Ze hebben zo hard gewerkt. Het ging elke race beter. Dit komt op het juiste moment."

    Inderdaad, geweldig voor williams en Russell. was ook foutloos vandaag en versloeg Hamilton op eigen kracht.

      Russell (met dubbel "l") gun je het dan nog enigszins, vanwege z'n geweldige kwalificatie... Maar verder hadden er van mij geen punten uitgedeeld mogen worden... Ik weet dat het in het reglement staat, maar dit was gewoon zieligmakend...

      Geen punten uitkeren... lekker dan als je je als team op zaterdag uit de naad hebt gewerkt en het weekend daarvoor dat je er niets aan over houdt....

      Het is wel illustratief van wat er vandaag de dag nog van het ooit zo grote Williams over is.

      Ze kunnen die renstal beter een nieuwe naam geven en met een schone lei beginnen. Laat het verleden het verleden en maak een ambitieus plan dat past bij een jeugdig team.

      Ik vind dat capito binnenhalen alvast een slimme zet was. De man stampte in een paar jaar het VW rallyteam uit de grond en won meermaals de WRC titels voor constructeurs. Als Russell nog steeds in de vuilnisbak had moeten rijden die er onder supervisie van Claire stond, dan hadden ze nog geen eens de 15e plaats op de grid gehaald zaterdag

    Het team werkt kei en keihard. Dan maakt het ook niet meer uit hoe je een podium scoort, maar of je een podium scoort. Deze mensjes zijn er terecht superblij mee.

    Tja hij heeft geen ongelijk.
    Een beker is een beker. En ik nog zeggen: die Williams met beide coureurs gaan dit jaar geen punten halen.

      Eens. Een verkreukelde pagina in het geschiedenisboek.

      Williams beste resultaat sinds Abu Dhabi 2014. Lance Stroll heeft ook eindelijk een opvolger gekregen in het lange rijtje podia klanten van Williams.

      Ik kan leven met de puntenverdeling op basis van de prestaties van het weekend, maar een podiumceremonie was totaal misplaatst. Een vlag op een modderschuit, noemen wij zoiets in den Nederlanden.
