Yuki Tsunoda: "Als je het over veiligheid hebt is dit de juiste beslissing"

Wie dacht even een middagje te genieten van een Formule 1-race kwam bedrogen uit. Maar droog was het zeer zeker niet en dat merkte ook Yuki Tsunoda in zijn AlphaTauri.

Na afloop van de zogenaamde race stond ook de jonge Japanner de wereldwijde pers te woord: "Het was overduidelijk niet mogelijk om te racen vandaag. En dan vooral voor de coureurs na P7. Ik denk dat het zicht te slecht was. Het zou veels te gevaarlijk zijn om te racen in deze omstandigheden en dan al helemaal op zo'n snelle baan als Spa. Dus als het over veiligheid gaat heeft de FIA de juiste beslissing gemaakt." 

Als je naar de veiligheid van de coureurs kijkt heeft de FIA het zeker bij het juiste eind. Maar sportief gezien was het een regelrechte miskleun. Ook Tsunoda vindt het vanuit dat oogpunt jammer: "Natuurlijk is het teleurstellend voor mij dat ik niet de mogelijkheid had om vandaag voor punten te strijden. Maar veiligheid is veel belangrijker." De Japanner werd als 15e geklasseerd en pakte dus geen punten in zijn AlphaTauri.

Op een baan als Paul Ricard was het geen probleem geweest en kon men heus wel rijden maar op old school circuit Spa kunnen de mannen zichzelf en anderen nog zwaar het ziekenhuis in rijd... [Lees verder]

      heb je gedurende die paar SC ronden de boordradio's niet gehoord. De een was nog banger dan de ander....

    Op een baan als Paul Ricard was het geen probleem geweest en kon men heus wel rijden maar op old school circuit Spa kunnen de mannen zichzelf en anderen nog zwaar het ziekenhuis in rijden en de risico’s waren daardoor te groot.
    De eerdere klassen die dag reden in beduidend betere omstandigheden met bovendien veel lagere snelheden.

    Viel er niet gewoon teveel regen?
    Droogrijden was daardoor ook helemaal niet mogelijk, mede door de lengte van de baan.
    Pijnlijk, maar een prima beslissing van de wedstrijdleiding.

    Ze hadden ook gewoon de hele race een gele vlag bij Eau Rouge kunnen zwaaien.
    De plek van de zware ongevallen.
    Dan had de race gewoon door kunnen gaan.

    Na p7 werd het te gevaarlijk, zegt Yuki.
    Dan had de FIA de coureurs toch in groepjes van 5 of 6 kunnen laten rijden.
    Effe met genoeg tijdsruimte tussen de groepjes de starts plannen en gaan met die banaan...
