Williams-duo kijkt uit naar Zandvoort

Voor het eerst in jaren staat Zandvoort weer op de Formule 1-kalender. De fans kijken er reikhalzend naar uit. Maar ze zijn niet de enige die er zin in hebben, de coureurs staat ook te trappelen.

De veelbesproken George Russell is een van de snelle heren en kan haast niet wachten om te gaan racen in de duinen. Op de site van Williams kijkt hij vooruit: "Ik heb echt zin in Zandvoort. Ik heb er een paar keer geracet en het is een fantastisch circuit. Het is golvend en snel en vraagt om een enorme inzet. Om dat te ervaren in een Formule 1-auto zal heel speciaal zijn."

Ook zijn teamgenoot Nicholas Latifi heeft al eens rondjes gereden op het circuit. Haast vanzelfsprekend heeft ook hij er wel zin in. Op de teamsite gaat hij ook wat dieper op zijn verwachtingen in: "Ik hoop dat ik het momentum van Spa mee kan nemen naar Zandvoort. Hoewel ik er sinds 2013 niet meer heb gereden denk ik dat het circuit een intens ritje in een Formule 1-auto zal opleveren. Het is een hoge snelheids-circuit en nogal krap, een heerlijk old-school circuit wat vooral voor een interessante kwalificatie zal zorgen. Het zal interessant worden om de veranderingen aan de baan te ervaren en dan vooral hoe de banking in de auto zal aanvoelen. Hopelijk hebben we er als team alweer een succesvol weekend."

Het gaat Williams vooralsnog voor de wind. De voormalige grootmacht lijkt de weg omhoog te hebben gevonden. In de laatste twee races wist het team dubbele punten te pakken met als absoluut hoogtepunt de tweede plaats van Russell in het geflatteerde weekend op Spa.

Laatste keer dat het voltallige Williams team op Zandvoort was, dat was volgens mij in '98,
met Ralf Schumacher en Alex Zanardi reden ze demo daar.

  Daar was ik ook bij.
  Ralf parkeerde zijn wagen vlak voor mijn neus en bluste zelf zijn geplofte motor omdat de baanmarshalls niet reageerden.

  ik stond zelf in de pitstraat, maar zag het op een scherm gebeuren, een smeulende Williams en een baanmarshall die op z'n dooie akkertje aan kwam sjokken met een ijsje in de hand, toen pakte Ralf van ellende zelf de brandblusser maar :)

  Nou, "smeulend" was niet het juiste woord.
  De motor plofte al bij het uitkomen van de Hugenholz waarbij de vlammen er uit sloegen maar pas bij de Audi S besefte Ralf dat hij de pits nooit meer ging halen.
  Zodra hij stil stond smoorde de dikke rook het vuur maar onder de kap brandde het nog flink.
  Vandaar ook de paniek bij Ralf.
  Waarom die baanmarshall zijn ijsje verkoos boven zijn opdracht is me een raadsel want hij had zich een halve baan kunnen voorbereiden op een langskomende fakkel.
  Och, het was spektakel en het haalde zelfs het nieuws en de kranten.
  Helaas kan ik het nergens terugvinden op YouTube. Ik denk dat mobieltjes toen nog niet zo massaal aanwezig waren. :D

  ik meen me te herinneren dat het een Cornetto met nootjes was, die zijn best lekker.
  Laat die Williams maar fakkelen, eerst m'n ijsje eten voordat het gesmolten is, zoiets moet die marshall gedacht hebben...
  kwestie van prioriteiten stellen ;)
