Mike Gascoyne bij Team Lotus bezig aan zijn laatste klus

Mike Gascoyne beschouwt Team Lotus als zijn laatste uitdaging. De Brit bouwde bij onder meer Jordan, Renault en Toyota een naam op als iemand die teams in verval uit het slop haalt. Met Team Lotus probeert hij een compleet nieuwe renstal naar de top van de Formule 1 te helpen. Het is zijn laatste klus in de Formule 1, andere teams hoeven niet aan te kloppen.

Gascoyne deelde aan de New York Times mede: Ik ben altijd de persoon geweest waar teams op afstappen als ze rond de achtste, negende plek eindigen en naar de derde plaats willen. Ik heb geen wereldtitel achter mijn naam staan, maar dat komt gedeeltelijk omdat ik steeds voortijdig ben weggekaapt. Er zijn meer teams die niet winnen dan teams die wel winnen en telkens kwam er een renstal voorbij die in mij de ideale persoon zag om de boel te verbeteren. En ik greep die uitdaging vaak aan, omdat ik daarvan geniet.

Nu is het anders. Ik was altijd een ingehuurde kracht, bij Team Lotus voel ik me echt thuis. Het is mijn team. Ik zal zeker met pensioen gaan bij deze renstal. Ik voel dat ik hier hoor en ik wil het team begeleiden naar de top. Het zou mij enorm veel voldoening geven als ik Team Lotus vanuit niets naar het podium weet te helpen.
