Gasly krijgt nieuwe Power Unit, start vanuit pitlane op Monza

Pierre Gasly zijn sprintkwalificatie eindigde gister in een tranendal. De Franse AlphaTauri-piloot crashte in de Curva Grande en moet daardoor achteraan starten in de race van vanmiddag. Toch doet hij dit niet: hij start vanuit de pitlane.

AlphaTauri heeft namelijk besloten om Gasly te voorzien van een hagelnieuwe Power Unit. Aangezien de nieuwe PU een andere specificatie heeft moet de verdedigende Monza-winnaar van uit de pits starten. Het is overigens niet het enige onderdeel wat is vervangen aan Gasly's snelle bolide. Het team heeft ook de versnellingsbak vervangen dus hij had sowieso al een gridstraf in de pocket.

Gasly won vorig jaar tot ieders verrassing de Italiaanse Grand Prix op Monza. Met de pitlane start vanmiddag in het achterhoofd kan je wel stellen dat een herhaling van zijn kunststukje van 2020 een heel lastig karwei gaat worden. Zijn crash werd gister veroorzaakt door een touché waarbij zijn voorvleugel beschadigde en zijn AlphaTauri onbestuurbaar werd. Hierdoor schoof hij in volle vaart door de grindbak tegen de bandenstapel in de Curva Grande.
