In Monza crashte Carlos Sainz keihard in de tweede vrije training. De Spanjaard verloor de macht over het stuur en stond plotsklaps in de muur. Opvallend genoeg was op de onboards van de Ferrari te zien dat hij best ver naar voren vloog in de auto.

Mogelijk zaten zijn gordels iets te los. Race Director Michael Masi komt nu met meer duidelijkheid over dit voorval. Tegenover Motorsport-Total.com sprak hij zich uit: "De gordels zijn zo gemaakt dat ze een beetje meegeven. Er zit een menselijk lichaam in dus er moet een beetje beweging inzitten. Je kan iemand er niet volledig in vastbinden. Er moet een beetje elasticiteit inzitten."

Maar het leek erop dat de gordels van Sainz ietsje te beweeglijk waren. Ook Masi heeft door dat dat nog wel eens aan de hand kon zijn: "Dat is mogelijk. We zullen kijken naar de elasticiteit van de gordel en wat we ervan kunnen leren. De veiligheidsmaatregelen en de constante verbeteringen hiervan zijn bemoedigend. Maar we moeten hiervan leren."
