Russen wilden tweede Grand Prix organiseren

Aankomend weekend staat de Russische Grand Prix op de kalender. De snelle heren zullen hun kunsten laten zien rondom het Olympisch park in Sotsji. Maar de organisatoren van de race hadden graag een tweede race georganiseerd. De Russen komen van een koude kermis thuis.

De directeur die verantwoordelijk is voor de organisatie in Sotsji gaat in gesprek met Championat in op de wens van een tweede race. Directeur Alexey Titov spreekt zich hier uit: "Er hebben gesprekken plaatsgevonden over een tweede race in Sotsji dit door de aangepaste kalender door het coronavirus."

Titov vindt het jammer. Ze hadden in Sotsji namelijk graag een jubileum willen vieren. Vanaf 2023 zal de Russische Grand Prix niet in Sotsji worden gereden, het circus verplaatst zich dan naar Igora Drive ten noorden van Sint Petersburg. Titov is er maar sip over: "Ik was een beetje teleurgesteld dat er geen tweede race zou zijn. In dat geval hadden we namelijk de tiende race in Sotsji georganiseerd in 2023. Dat zou het compleet maken maar het is wat het is."

Titov had nog een ander gat op de kalender op het oog. De Rus had namelijk ook nog het idee om de weggevallen race op Suzuka te vervangen: "We hebben erover gesproken maar laten we zeggen dat we niet op gelijke voet stonden met de Formule 1. Het waren meerdere factoren die aan beide kanten mee speelden, organisatorisch en economisch."

  Het circuit is vanaf het begin ingetekend geweest in de plannen voor het Olympisch park. Dus er zijn niet extreem veel extra kosten geweest om dit voor elkaar te boksen. Sterker nog; economisch gezien was dit een betere zet dan de laatste keer dat een stratenrace na een paar edities de nek omgedraaid werd; Valencia.

  Ah zo.
  Ik ben even aan het zoeken geweest naar activiteiten na 2014.
  Dat zijn er bar weinig.
  Eigenlijk ligt het er bij als een complete spookstad.
  Zo ook andere Olympische locaties.
  Ik ben blij dat we deze miljarden niet in Nederland aan ons broek hebben…
