Tost vierkant achter Tsunoda: "Nooit over getwijfeld"

De contractverlening van Yuki Tsunoda bij AlphaTauri was een enorme verrassing voor Tsunoda zelf. De jonge Japanner kent een wisselvallig seizoen en maakt met enige regelmaat brokken. Toch heeft zijn teambaas Franz Tost geen enkel ogenblik getwijfeld over het kunnen van zijn coureur.

Tsunoda debuteerde in Bahrein en wist in zijn eerste race gelijk punten te pakken. Het leek de kick-start voor een succesvol seizoen maar daarna stagneerde de resultaten. Hij wist echter nog wel een aantal keer in de punten te eindigen met als hoogtepunt een zesde plaats in Hongarije.

Al met al zorgen de prestaties ervoor dat teambaas Tost nooit twijfelde aan de toekomst van Tsunoda. In gesprek met Motorsport.com gaat de ervaren teambaas hierop in: "Ik heb er persoonlijk nooit over getwijfeld. Tegenwoordig moet je rookies wat meer tijd geven als ze naar de Formule 1 komen. De sport is zo complex en lastig dat je niet van een jonge coureur moet verwachten dat hij de ervaren jongens gaat laten zien hoe het moet. Tot nu toe heeft Yuki het redelijk goed gedaan."

Tost heeft ook heus wel door dat Tsunoda nog wel eens van de baan vliegt. Maar ook daar maakt de Oostenrijkse teambaas zich geen zorgen over: "Natuurlijk heeft hij een paar crashes achter de rug, maar ik zeg altijd dat de crashperiode onderdeel is van het leerproces. Hoe kan iemand de limiet vinden als hij niet mag crashen? Ik hoop wel dat zijn crashperiode voorbij is nu."

Na Verstappen mag iedereen denken "wat goed is, komt snel", maar wat mij betreft is Tsunoda te vroeg gelanceerd. Het leren zoeken naar de limiet is toch iets dat je in de lagere raceklasses zou moeten leren. Vergelijking met Verstappen gaat niet op, die leek meteen bij zijn debuut in de F1 snel te zijn zonder over de limiet te gaan.

In F2 was Tsunoda exceptioneel, maar in F1 zeker nog niet.
En dat hadden veel mensen (incl. ikzelf) wel verwacht. Ik dacht dat 'ie het Gasly meteen heel lastig zou gaan maken.
Maar hij maakt te vaak dezelfde fouten, schijnt niet heel snel te leren, en hij is grof en agressief geweest over de team radio.
Het wordt tijd dat 'ie de zaken op orde krijgt. 1 jaartje contractverlenging ok, maar dat is ook omdat RBR niet veel andere keuzes had.
Volgend jaar is misschien een heel ander verhaal.
