Pierre 'best of the rest' Gasly ruikt bloed na penalty's Verstappen en Leclerc

Op een gesneuvelde voorvleugel na had Pierre Gasly een vlekkeloze vrijdag tijdens de Grand Prix van Rusland in Sotsji. De Fransman lijkt vrijdag voor te sorteren op een wellicht kansrijk of mogelijk glorieus weekend. De AlphaTauri-coureur was achter de Mercedessen de snelste coureur tijdens de vrijdagmiddag. Aangezien Max Verstappen en Charles Leclerc sowieso achteraan starten tijdens de race vanwege straffen, nemen Gasly's kansen alleen maar toe.

Pierre heeft vrijdagavond sterke kaarten, afgaande op zijn ritjes tijdens de eerste trainingen, maar helemáál gelukkig is hij nu ook weer niet. Na de eerste vrije trainingen laat de Fransman weten: "Het was een positieve dag in termen van prestaties, deze auto lijkt tot nu toe goed te werken hier en het is een goed begin om het weekend in te gaan. Hoewel de prestaties er zijn, ben ik niet 100% comfortabel met de balans in de auto maar we hebben een paar dingen die we vanavond kunnen wegnemen en verbeteren. We weten dat zowel Charles als Max penalty's nemen voor de race, dus er zijn zeker kansen voor ons dit weekend. Onze belangrijkste focus ligt echter op onszelf pakket en het maximaliseren van wat we kunnen doen om te helpen in onze strakke strijd op het middenveld.”

Terwijl Gasly tijdens de eerste training zich ook weer voorin het F1-veld wist te melden met de zesde snelste tijd, kwam Yuki Tsunoda niet verder dan de zestiende snelste tijd. De Japanner was twee seconden langzamer dan zijn teamgenoot. Tijdens de tweede vrije training was Gasly 'best of the rest' en noteerde hij de derde tijd, terwijl Tsunoda de achttiende snelste tijd noteerde in VT2.

Mocht er geen kwalificatie plaatsvinden, dan heeft Gasly wel een heel goede uitgangspositie vanaf de 3e plek.

Zonder druk en als 1ste man van een team gewoon een hele degelijke snelle rijder. Ik heb hem ook nooit slecht gevonden. Maar iedereen ziet er als een amateur uit naast Max. Toch vind ik dat hij nog wel een kans verdient als checo zo blijft aanklooien. Maar dan moet hij wel heel goed gaan beseffen dat hij Max moet helpen en niet dat hij zelf wel even 5 keer kampioen wordt. Ik zou hem volgend jaar of het jaar erna nog een kans geven, want rijden kan hij wel, Mentaal moet hij sterker worden. En ik heb wel het idee dat hij dat is geworden het afgelopen jaar.

Checo moet gaan leveren anders kan hij wieberen.
