Yuki Tsunoda komt veel snelheid en zelfvertrouwen tekort op vrijdag in Rusland

Yuki Tsunoda komt vrijdag opvallend veel snelheid tekort ten opzichte van de snelheid die zijn teamgenoot Pierre Gasly aan de dag legt in Sotsji. De Japanse rookie worstelde tijdens de vrijdag. Terwijl Pierre Gasly tijdens de eerste vrije training zesde werd, noteerde Tsunoda de zestiende tijd.

Tijdens de tweede vrije training werd het verschil nog groter: Tsunoda kwam niet verder dan de achttiende snelste tijd, terwijl teamgenoot Gasly 'best of the rest' was met een derde tijd achter de twee Mercedessen.

Tsunoda blikt op de website van AlphaTauri terug op een moeizame vrijdag in Rusland, al lijkt de Japanner zelf ook nog te gissen naar een verklaring voor het grote verschil met zijn teamgenoot. “Ik heb tot nu toe in Sotsji met de algehele grip geworsteld, maar ik ben erin geslaagd om vandaag belangrijke kilometers in de auto te maken, vooral voor zondag, omdat we denken dat de race zonnig kan zijn. We weten dat de prestaties in de auto zitten, dus ik moet vanavond gewoon weggaan, naar de gegevens kijken en kijken hoe ik me kan verbeteren voor morgen. We weten niet wat er gaat gebeuren met het weer, dus we moeten zo goed mogelijk voorbereid zijn om de FP3 en de kwalificatie in te gaan.”

In hoeverre de AlphaTauri-coureurs met verschillende hoeveelheden brandstof de baan zijn op gestuurd is niet bekend. Of heeft het team vrijdag ingezet heeft op twee totaal verschillende soorten afstellingen voor hun bolides is eveneens niet bekend. Het team heeft de derde vrije training nog de tijd om beide auto's op snelheid te brengen alvorens zaterdagmiddag de kwalificatie op het programma staat tijdens de Russische Grand Prix in Sotsji.

Jonathan Eddolls is Chief Race Engineer bij AlphaTauri en hij stelt dat er nogal een groot contrast was aan de beide kanten van de garage van het team.

Eddolls: "Yuki had niet zoveel vertrouwen in de auto en is niet in staat geweest om dezelfde rondetijden te halen, dus we moeten vanavond wat werk verzetten om echt te begrijpen wat we moeten doen om hem zich comfortabeler te laten voelen in de auto en zijn potentieel te benutten."

Uit betrouwbare bron heb ik vernomen dat het team vanaf zaterdag een kussentje gaat plaatsen op het stoeltje van Yuki..

  Dat is heel mooi om te horen, maar tegelijkertijd ook een gemsite kans voor Veekay (die helaas al in een vroeg stadium had bijgetekend bij ECR).
