O'Ward kan Mclaren-training vergeten: "Zouden wij nooit doen"

McLaren is dit seizoen niet alleen actief in de Formule 1 maar ook op het grote continent aan de andere kant van de plas. In Amerika rijdt het team ook in de Indycar. Een van hun coureurs daar is Patricio O'Ward, de Mexicaan mocht bij een overwinning een Formule 1-bolide aan de tand gaan voeren.

O'Ward wist inderdaad te winnen en McLaren is dan ook sportief. De Mexicaan mag in Abu Dhabi bij de rookietest na het seizoen de McLaren van dit seizoen aan de tand voeren. Aangezien het Indycar-seizoen erop zit heeft O'Ward genoeg tijd over om bijvoorbeeld ook in thuisland Mexico een training te rijden.

Publiciteit

Helaas lijkt een optreden voor eigen publiek er niet in te zitten. McLaren-bons Zak Brown zegt dit in gesprek met Motorsport.com: "Dat zouden we nooit doen. We zouden niet in staat zijn om een coureur in te zetten tijdens de vrije training want hij begint zonder doel aan het weekend. Het zou nieuws zijn in Mexico en goede publiciteit opleveren maar we willen optimaal presteren en een andere coureur inzetten zou effect hebben."

Ferrari

Daarnaast is het team ook in een fikse strijd met Ferrari verwikkeld om de derde plek in het constructeurskampioenschap. Brown vindt dat belangrijk: "We zitten midden in een strijd met Ferrari om de derde plaats bij de constructeurs. We gaan niets doen wat die strijd in de weg kan staan, zoveel is zeker."

Volstrekt logisch dat ze een coureur die niet in beeld is voor een F1 zitje geen kostbare tijd in een vrije training geven. Dat andere teams dat doen vanwege budgettaire redenen kan ik begrijpen, maar in het geval van McLaren is dat niet nodig. Dus zou dat onverstandig zijn. Zeker nu de vrije trainingen ook nog eens korter zijn dan voorheen. Alle tracktijd wil je dan optimaal benutten.

  Helemaal ook omdat ze met Ferrari vechten voor P3 in het kampioenschap, dan wil je maximaal gebruik maken van je tracktijd.

  Inderdaad.
  Ergens anders staat in de titel dat O'ward niet zal rijden in Mexico. Die titel omvat tenminste wat er daadwerkelijk gezegd is. Hier op GP Today lijkt het net alsof O'ward helemaal geen kans krijgt om in de Mclaren te rijden.
