De vorige editie van de Turkse Grand Prix was een ware glibber en glij-show. Er was veel spektakel op de baan in Istanboel maar grip was er niet. De coureurs glibberde over het nieuwe Turkse asfalt en klaagden achteraf dan ook steen en been over de baan.

Voor de inval-editie van dit jaar heeft de FIA maatregelen genomen. Ze hebben er alles aangedaan om de coureurs nu wel de kans te geven opzoek te gaan naar grip. Er zijn meerdere dingen aangepast en daarnaast is het asfalt ,in tegenstelling tot vorig jaar, niet gloednieuw meer.

Race Director Michael Masi legt in gesprek met Motorsport.com uit wat er precies is aangepakt in Turkije: "Het oppervlak is met water gestraald, dat is de beste manier om het te omschrijven. Dat is een gebruikelijke methode om de baan te behandelen. We hebben gezien dat deze methode regelmatig wordt toegepast in Singapore, waar de openbare wegen die we gebruiken regelmatig opnieuw worden geasfalteerd vanwege het verkeer."
