Pirelli-voorman ziet dat zijn rubbers maximaal zijn benut in Turkse Grand Prix

Bandenbaas Mario Isola van bandenmaker Pirelli kan opgelucht ademhalen na de Grand Prix van Turkije. Sommige coureurs tartten het lot door extreem lang door te rijden op de intermediates. In de 48ste ronde bijvoorbeeld, lijken de banden onder de auto van Lewis Hamilton nog maar weinig op de banden zoals ze eruit zagen bij de start van de race.

Esteban Ocon is de enige coureur die helemaal geen bandenwissel maakte in Turkije. De Fransman reed van start tot finish op de tot het koord versleten Italiaanse rubber. Uit deze beelden op Twitter valt op te maken dat de race niet veel langer had moeten duren voor Ocon.

"Tot het koord toe versleten"

Mario Isola van Pirelli vertelt na de Grand Prix: "Elke auto is weer anders, dus de mate van slijtage is ook anders, bovendien is de slijtage ook afhankelijk van hoe hard ermee is gereden. Min of meer alle banden waren tot het koord versleten. Dat was niet alleen bij Ocon's auto, maar bij bijna alle auto's die na ronde 47 en 48 pas zijn gestopt: daarbij waren de banden finaal versleten."

Isola was tijdens de race dan ook druk doende om de teams te waarschuwen om te kiezen voor de veiligheid door een pitstop te maken. "We weten dat met het nieuwe asfalt en hogere mate van grip op deze baan dat het nu veel veeleisender was dan vorig jaar. Ook was het circuit niet droog, maar nog altijd schurend. Ik gaf engineers instructies om hun coureurs een pitstop te laten maken met het oog op de veiligheid."

P1 en P2 bleven hetzelfde, al moest Bottas uiteindelijk nog wel een inhaalactie doen voor P1. Verder waren er toch best veel positiewisselingen en inhaalactie's. Ik durf er wel een familiepak rubbers op te verwedden, dat er bij de volgende regenrace minimaal 1 verplichte pitstop zal moeten worden gemaakt.

  Ik dacht tot halverwege deze race dat dit sowieso verplicht was en dat men alleen niet naar een andere compound hoefde te wisselen vanwege de regen.

Mooie inhaalrace van Sainz, het meningsverschil bij Hamilton en Mercedes. En strategisch was het ook best een interessante en onzekere wedstrijd. Ging de baan misschien toch richting slicks of zou er juist nog weer een buitje komen. Voor mij was het allerminst saai, maar als jij er lekker bij in slaap kon vallen, ook prima toch?

  t was echt niet saai; de opmars van Hamilton en Sainz, gedoe met wel of niet wisselen, gevecht van Hamilton met Perez, genoeg voor spanning op de bank....

Fijn voor mr Isola, maar ik zie graag een race. Doordeweeks zie ik al genoeg management, graag in een (race)weekend iets anders.
