Horner staat achter volle kalender: "Iedereen is 10/15 jaar geleden vergeten"

Aankomend seizoen wordt naar alle waarschijnlijkheid het drukste Formule 1-seizoen ooit. Er staan in 2022 23 Grands Prix op het programma en één derde daarvan kent ook een sprintkwalificatie. Veel teambazen vrezen echter dat de druk op hun werknemers immens gaat worden.

Deze week gaf ook Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff aan de overvolle kalender nogal druk te vinden. Ook Wolff is bang dat het veels te veel gaat worden voor zijn manschappen. Hiermee voegt Wolff zich bij onder andere McLaren-chef Andreas Seidl. Toch zijn er ook teambazen die er anders over denken, deze week gaf bijvoorbeeld Franz Tost (AlphaTauri) aan dat zijn werknemers maar moesten vertrekken als het te veel werd.

Horner

Nu spreekt ook Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner zich uit. In gesprek met Sportsmail blijkt dat hij meer de mening van Tost deelt: "Iedereen heeft keuzes in het leven. Je kan naar de Formule 2 gaan, 12 races rijden en de helft van het geld verdienen. Ik denk dat veel jongens in de paddock zijn vergeten dat we tien/vijftien jaar geleden in januari gingen testen en de coureurs en hun engineers toen van race naar test naar race naar test gingen."

Testen, testen, testen

Horner doelt op de tijd dat er veel minder races waren maar testen nog geen limiet had. De teams konden dus testen wanneer ze maar wilden. Tegenwoordig hebben de teams maar een handjevol filmdagen waarbij ze met de huidige auto maar 100 kilometer per dag mogen afleggen.

Juiste volgorde

Horner denkt dat de nieuwe kalender gewoon te doen is, maar dan moet er wel op een logische manier worden geracet. Horner: "Ik denk dat het te managen is als naar de juiste locaties in de juiste volgorde gaan in de juiste volgorde over de wereld."

Dat was denk ik voor de monteurs en overige werknemers nog vermoeiender dan de 21 a 22 races van nu maar zonder/beperkte in-season testing.

  toch is er een verschil in testen op Fiorano of Silverstone en thuis slapen vs het velen reizen.

Niet alleen ongelimiteerd testen, maar dus ook de mogelijkheid om zelf te plannen waar (bijv. een eigen testcircuit of iig ergens in de buurt waarbij iedereen gewoon thuis kan slapen) en wanneer je dit deed. Dit scheelt natuurlijk wel in de planning.

Verder had je dus ook de mogelijkheid om je personeel te variëren. Ook zonder budgetcap was dit lastig te doen, omdat je met gelimiteerd testen nog steeds het personeel moet kiezen dat alle relevante ervaring heeft en dan kom je dus uit bij dezelfde mensen, waar vroeger je meer mensen deze ervaring kon geven, en zelfs een apart testteam naast het raceteam kon samenstellen.
