'Sydney wil Melbourne vervangen als organisator Australische Grand Prix'

Dat de Formule 1 graag naar nieuwe locaties trekt is wel duidelijk. Maar nu blijkt dat er zich een nieuwe kaper op de Australische kust heeft gemeld. Het heeft er namelijk alle schijn van dat Sydney de Australische Grand Prix van Melbourne wil afsnoepen. Dit willen ze doen met een bijzonder circuit.

De lokale tv-zender Seven Network meldt dat het bestuur van de regio New South Wales een plan heeft bedacht om de race naar Sydney te halen. Het idee is om een 'Monaco-achtig' circuit aan te leggen rondom de beroemde haven van de stad. De lokale tv-zender weet te melden dat er gesprekken plaats vinden op hoog niveau.

Coronacrisis

Het regiobestuur ziet de Grand Prix blijkbaar als een perfecte toevoeging voor hun stad. Het regiobestuur zou ook nog eens bereid zijn om tientallen miljoenen in mega evenementen te steken om het herstel na de coronacrisis te versnellen. Een race zou namelijk best wat toeristen naar de stad trekken en dat komt dan goed uit als men zich wil herstellen.

Niets nieuws

Overigens zijn de geruchten over een Grand Prix in Sydney alles behalve nieuw. In 2010 en 2015 waren er ook al geruchten over een race door de straten van Sydney. Mochten ze de Formule 1 zo gek krijgen om daadwerkelijk naar Sydney te komen, dan moeten ze nog wel eventjes wachten. Melbourne heeft namelijk een contract tot 2025.

      Tsja, het zit nie mee in Australie. Eerst verplaatsen ze de race van het (in mijn optiek) coole Adelaide naar het saaiere Melbourne. Dan komt de wereldwijde Cojona-show waarbij de GP van Melbourne als een van de eerste events, op pijnlijke wijze werd gecancelled. Nu zit alles daar op slot en lijken ze een Dutch GP-tje te doen; Voor de bühne een uitverkocht event terwijl de bevolking daar onder regime wordt behandeld en niet zit te wachten op een GP , maar op vrijheid. Gaan ze alweer de GP verplaatsen. Misschien wordt het dan een uitdagendere GP.

      Golf_GTI, dat is niet correct. Ik spreek bijna dagelijks met mijn collega's in Sydney, vanochtend nog. Ze kunnen weer gewoon naar buiten, vanaf november mag er weer gevlogen worden.
      Velen praten zo over Australië, maar niemand hoor ik over landen als China en Japan. China is op slot en de Chinese regering vindt dat wel prima. Meer en meer expats verdwijnen en geven hun plekken aan locals. De Chinese overheid ziet buitenlandse besturen in hun land niet als gewenst. Als corona onder controle is, zal China de deuren nog wel even dicht houden, waar Australië dan al lang en breed weer open is.

      En Hansah: "onder een regime" is jouw interpretatie. Daar vinden het het niet leuk maar wel begrijpelijk. Mijn collega's ondergaan het gelaten. En zoals ik hierboven schrijf, het land gaat met een vaccinatiegraad nu van 80% weer open.

    Lijkt me een interessante lokatie voor een gp, zou ook voorstander zijn van een terugkeer naar de straten van Adelaide, die race had ook altijd zijn charme.
    Melbourne heb ik nooit veel aan gevonden. Saaie baan, weinig goede inhaalmogelijkheden. Je vrat het altijd maar op omdat het meestal weer de 1e gp na een lange winterstop was

      Heb het geprobeerd maar kan me echt niet heel veel leuke races op Melbourne herinneren. 2002 was de laatste leuke race?

    Please niet doen. Sinds de Amerikanen de dienst uit maken in de F1, heerst de stompzinnige gedachte dat we vooral op stratencircuit moeten racen. Dat is leuk op de playstation, maar dat is het dan ook.

    Zolang het niet zo'n optochtcircuitje als Monaco gaat worden vind ik het best, Melbourne is meestal pretty boring.
