McLaren verwerpt suggestie van te conservatieve houding

Het team van McLaren is het niet eens met de geluiden dat de Britse renstal te conservatief heeft gehandeld in Valencia. Na de Europese Grand Pirx verkondigde coureur Jenson Button dat McLaren meer risico moet nemen om Red Bull Racing in te halen en teamgenoot Lewis Hamilton voegde daaraan toe dat zijn werkgever te conservatief was geweest door een upgrade thuis te laten.

Technisch directeur Paddy Lowe bestrijdt dat: We hebben de gebruikelijke ontwikkelingen gaande, de normale updates zoals onderdelen voor het bodywork. Die gebeurden toch al. Ik heb de quotes van onze coureurs gelezen en wij begrijpen ze eerlijk gezegd niet. Er is denk ik een misverstand bij de rijders over wat we gedaan hebben. We laten geen mogelijkheid onbenut om de limiet op te zoeken bij elk aspect voor de prestatie van de auto. We zijn absoluut geen conservatieve organisatie.

We nemen grotere risico's op de momenten dat daarom gevraagd wordt. Het hangt af van het punt in het kampioenschap. Soms speel je meer op veilig om te zorgen dat je de finish haalt in plaats van vol voor overwinningen gaan. Dat is een ongebruikelijke houding die wij zeker niet hanteren, het is een houding voor een team dat de titel bijna op zak heeft. Het is niet geschikt als je achter staat en juist probeert om punten goed te maken op de leider.
