Ook Stoffel Vandoorne gaat IndyCar testen

De IndyCar is in trek bij coureurs die net buiten de Formule 1-boot vallen. Na Nico Hülkenberg zal namelijk ook Stoffel Vandoorne een test gaan rijden. De Belg zal gaan testen in een bolide van Arrow McLaren SP. Het team wil namelijk in 2023 een derde auto inzetten en bekijkt de mogelijkheden.

Vandoorne was jarenlang het grootste talent van McLaren. Hij reed in 2017 en 2018 in de Formule 1 voor het team. Tegenwoordig is hij voor Mercedes actief in de Formule E en is hij reserve bij het Formule 1-team. Ook kan hij aan McLaren worden uitgeleend als er iets aan de hand is met die coureurs.

No-brainer

Arrow McLaren SP-president Taylor Kiel vindt het een logische keuze om Vandoorne te laten testen. Tegenover RACER geeft hij tekst en uitleg: "Veel mensen hebben op onze deur geklopt. We bekijken wat het beste is voor ons programma. Stoffel heeft inderdaad wat lijntjes met het team en is daarnaast ook actief betrokken als reserve. Dit was een no-brainer. Hij is een getalenteerd coureur."

Puzzel

Wanneer Vandoorne precies in actie gaat komen is nog niet bekend. Kiel legt uit dat ze hiervoor nog eventjes moeten puzzelen: "Er is nog geen datum. We hebben gesprekken gevoerd maar het moeilijkste is het vinden van een beschikbaar circuit. Eerlijk gezegd is dit heel lastig."

Blijf jammer dat een jongen als Robin Frijns niet daar terecht kwam, die o.a. Vandoorne verslagen heeft in de juniorklasses destijds, en Hulkenberg is goed bevriend met Frijns en ziet hem als zijn gelijke, maar Frijns kon niet naar F1 doorstoten maar ook niet verder kwam dan een Indycar test.

Hoop dat Vandoorne wel een betere kans krijgt. Ook hij hoort in F1 en zeker in Indycars.
Wel goed om te zien dat ze bij de Indycars wel meer naar talent kijken. Echter ook is daar geld nog steeds heel belangrijk.
