Qatar heeft geen problemen met protesten: "Je bent vrij om te zeggen wat je wilt"

Op 21 november zal de eerste Grand Prix van Qatar van start gaan. Toen deze race werd aangekondigd barstte er een storm van kritiek los. Het land in het Midden-Oosten staat nou niet bepaald bekend om zijn goede mensenrechten. Sterker nog, de mensenrechtensituatie in het land is miserabel. Bij de bouw van stadions voor het WK voetbal vielen veel doden.

De gang naar Qatar rijmt niet helemaal met de campagnes van de Formule 1 omtrent gelijkheid. Voor elke race is er immers een momentje waar de coureurs ,onder leiding van Lewis Hamilton, kunnen knielen. Naar alle waarschijnlijkheid zal dit ook in Qatar gebeuren, de organisatie heeft er in ieder geval geen problemen mee.

Tegenover persbureau AFP spreekt Abdulrahman Al Mannai, de president van de lokale autosportbond, zich uit: "We zijn verheugd dat we de coureurs kunnen supporten om hun gedachtes te verkondigen op hun platform. We zien het in Qatar niet als probleem omdat je vrij bent om te zeggen wat je wilt."

      En dat schijnen ze daar niet te beseffen.

    In 2022 is Qatar het gastland van het Wereldkampioenschap Voetbal. Bijna 2 miljoen arbeidsmigranten – 90 procent van de totale bevolking van Qatar – werken er aan de infrastructuur, in de bouw, de dienstverlening én aan stadions en andere faciliteiten voor het toernooi. De arbeidsmigranten komen vooral uit armere landen in Azië en Afrika. Veel gastarbeiders maken een valse start: ze komen in Qatar aan met schulden, omdat ze leningen tegen een hoge rente moesten afsluiten om de buitensporige wervingskosten voor gastarbeiders te kunnen betalen. Daarnaast komt het vaak voor dat ze ander werk krijgen dan is afgesproken, tegen een lager salaris dan was beloofd.

    Bij aankomst worden arbeidsmigranten onderworpen aan het kafala-systeem. Dit vereist dat zij een lokale sponsor hebben – de kafeel – die zorgt voor de toestemming om het land binnen te komen en voor de verblijfs- en werkvergunning. Bij onenigheid over loon, huisvesting, arbeidsomstandigheden en andere werkgerelateerde zaken, kan de kafeel besluiten zich als sponsor terug te trekken. Wanneer de kafeel dit doet, vervallen alle wettelijke rechten van de arbeidsmigrant. Arbeidsmigranten zijn hierdoor de speelbal van de werkgever.

    Doordat werkgevers zoveel macht hebben over hun buitenlandse arbeidskrachten, is uitbuiting en arbeidsmisbruik in Qatar wijdverbreid. Wanneer een arbeidskracht klachten heeft, bijvoorbeeld omdat hij geen salaris krijgt, lange werktijden heeft, zijn paspoort in beslag is genomen of onder slechte omstandigheden moet leven, kan hij eigenlijk geen kant op. Er zijn nagenoeg geen mogelijkheden om de situatie aan te vechten. Arbeidsmigranten mogen niet toetreden tot een vakbond en mogen er ook geen oprichten.

      @MWHT; yep. Scheelt dat die arme sloebers in dat gastvrije Quatar echt volledig vrij zijn hun mening te geven. Oké, consequentie is uitgehongerd worden en ipv 18 uur per dag er 23 werken, er moet wel een uurtje overblijven om de stokslagen in ontvangst te nemen natuurlijk. Maar; je kunt lullen wat je wilt, in dat vrije Quatar mag ze absoluut je vrije mening verkondigen. Ik wou dat we in NL zo tolerant waren als in Quatar.

      Amnesty zelf is ook niet zo een hele lekkere partij om voor te werken. Daar spelen zich wat dingen af a la Groen Links zeg maar.

      Inderdaad , Wat als je iets voor hebt, of je vriendin is te kort gerokt naar hun zin...lachen ze je dan nog toe.
      IK hoop dat veel ('alle ) supporters inzien en uit een vorm van protest simpel niet afreizen naar daar. Al is het niet voor het schenden van mensenrechten , simpel ook een W K voetbal niet hoort in een omgeving van 50 gr. en een land dat geen enkele traditie heeft met voetbal of zijn supporters.
