Gridstraf vanwege nieuwe versnellingsbak in de Williams van George Russell

Williams-coureur George Russell kende een teleurstellende vrijdagmiddag in Mexico. Het aanstormende Mercedes-talent stuurde zijn Williams het circuit op, maar merkte al snel dat er problemen waren met zijn versnellingsbak.

De Brit vroeg zijn team of hij mocht schakelen, maar dat werd hem afgeraden. Russell reed zijn bolide op constante lage snelheid terug naar het team. Een frustrerende middag, want een snelle ronde op de klokken rijden zat er niet in. Bovendien krijgt Russell na en versnellingsbakwissel een gridstraf in Mexico.

Russell is dan ook weinig opgetogen na afloop van de stroeve vrijdagmiddag. "Ik kan er eigenlijk niet zo heel veel over zeggen om eerlijk te zijn. Het was een probleem in de versnellingbak dus de jongens zoeken nog steeds uit hoe dat heeft kunnen gebeuren en of wij die versnellingsbak kunnen repareren en daarna zien we wel verder."

Race-versnellingsbak

Vanwege problemen met de 'vrijdagse versnellingsbak' in VT1 koos het team van Williams ervoor om de race-versie alvast in de bolide te monteren voor VT2. Die versnellingsbak zou het einde van de race dus niet gehaald hebben, zo lijkt het. De gridstraf zorgt ervoor dat Russell vijf plaatsten terug wordt gezet op de startgrid tijdens de race van zondag.

Russell laat weten: "Het is niet ideaal, maar het is nog maar de vrijdag en de punten worden op zondag verdeeld", zo nuanceert de toekomstige teamgenoot van Lewis Hamilton.

Gridstraf

Uit documenten van de FIA blijkt dat de versnellingsbak van Russell het na de Amerikaanse Grand Prix vijf Grands Prix heeft uitgehouden, terwijl voorgeschreven staat dat na zes aaneengesloten races pas gewisseld mag worden naar een nieuw exemplaar. Russell voldoet dus niet aan de reglementen en daarom wordt de Williams zondag gestraft op de grid.
