De kwalificatie in Mexico pakte ietsje anders uit dan velen van te voren hadden verwacht. Niet Red Bull maar Mercedes domineerde de sessie. Valtteri Bottas pakte de pole en Lewis Hamilton start vanavond naast hem op de eerste startrij. Teambaas Toto Wolff verkeerde in jubelstemming.

Na afloop verscheen de dolenthousiaste Wolff voor de camera's van Sky Sports: "Deze sport blijft mij verbazen. Het kan zo snel veranderen van de ene op de andere sessie. In Austin waren we dominant op de vrijdag maar verloren we performance. Hier lagen we ver achter maar ineens kregen we alles in Q2 voor elkaar en kwam alles bij elkaar."

Wolff had zelfs al sterk rekening gehouden met een tweede startrij voor zijn mannen: "Ik denk dat we aan het nadenken waren over wat we zouden doen als we op de derde en vierde plaats zouden starten. Het kan een voordeel zijn en het is misschien een klein voordeel maar ik ben zo blij dat we het momentum hebben gepakt. Hopelijk gaat het door tot het einde van het jaar."
