Officieel: Grand Prix Spanje verlengt contract tot 2026

Het hing al eventjes in de lucht maar de kogel is nu officieel door de kerk: Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya heeft zijn contract verlengd en zal tot 2026 op de Formule 1-kalender blijven staan. Dit betekent ook dat de race in 2022 gewoon doorgaat en niet meer onder voorbehoud op de kalender staat.

Het circuit werd in 1991 aangelegd in de omgeving van Barcelona waar een jaar later ook de Olympische Spelen plaatsvonden. In 1991 werd er dan ook de eerste Grand Prix van Spanje verreden en die is er sindsdien niet meer vertrokken.

Domenicali

Formule 1-CEO Stefano Domenicali is zeer in zijn sas met de contractverlenging. In een persbericht spreekt hij zich uit: "We zijn blij dat we deze deal kunnen aankondigen. Ik wil de promotor en de autoriteiten bedanken voor hun enthousiasme en inzet om de Formule 1 in Barcelona te behouden."

Duurzaamheidsplan

Onderdeel van de nieuwe overeenkomst zijn ook enkele aanpassingen aan de baan en faciliteiten. Hieronder vallen ook enkele veranderingen die moeten bijdragen aan de zeer ambitieuze duurzaamheidsplannen van het circuit in Catalonië.

    Ligt het aan mij of lijkt het dat ze tegenwoordig langere contracten aan gaan?
    Volgens mij was dat ten tijde van Bernie niet.

      5 jaar is niet uitzonderlijk. Maar het is minder opportunistisch en ze zuigen de circuits niet zo uit als Bernie deed. Want langere contracten zijn tegenwoordig om wat stabiliteit op de kalender te krijgen. In de tijd van Ecclestone betaalden ze per jaar steeds meer om een GP te organiseren en dat ging op een gegeven moment om belachelijke bedragen.

    Mooi dat dit circuit op de kalender blijft. De diverse secties geven een goede indicatie van de auto's qua performance op rechte stukken, langzame stukken en hoge snelheidsbochten. Altijd een mooie graadmeter voor de races daarna.

      Hahahah eigenlijk wel. Maar ja dat een mooie race. Ik heb zelfs nog gejuicht voor Verstappen toen.

      @Snork Dat was eigenlijk typerend voor Spanje in deze generatie, dat de snellere Ferrari's niet langs de RBR's kwamen.

      Spanje is gewoon een erg saaie baan. Het feit dat veel coureurs het kennen als hun eigen broekzak, maakt dat ze ook goed weten waar en hoe je moet verdedigen en hoe ze het optimale uit hun rondje kunnen halen. Prima voor testwerk daarmee (hoewel ik het liefst zou zijn dat ze gewoon kunnen testen waar ze willen, zelfs als het nog steeds onder restricties ligt qua hoeveelheid), maar niet voor racen.

      Bwoah, ook op mindere circuits zit er weleens een leuke race tussen. Vind Barcelona niet echt een leuk baantje.

      Wel makkelijk om naar toe te reizen. Vueling vluchtje naar Barcelona, paar dagen in de stad rondhangen en dan een weekendje op het circuit. Ik kan er wel mee leven.
