Vettel over status F1-coureurs: "We zijn geen beroemdheden"

Formule 1-coureurs staan continu in de spotlights. Toch ziet Aston Martin-piloot en viervoudig wereldkampioen Sebastian Vettel zichzelf en zijn collega's niet als wereldsterren.

"Beroemdheden zoals wij? Ik weet het niet, ik beschouw mezelf helemaal niet als een bekende persoon", antwoordde de Duitser. "Ik denk niet dat coureurs sterren zijn. Ik denk dat we zijn wat we zijn, we zijn coureurs."

De jonge rijders hebben vaak de grote ambitie om de F1 te bereiken. Niet voor status of geld, maar om zichzelf als beste coureur ter wereld te kronen. Voor Vettel was dat niet anders.

“Ik werd op zeer jonge leeftijd verliefd op de sport en ik hou er nog steeds van. Ik denk dat dat is wat mij motiveert, dus het is niet echt iets anders."

Toch zijn de neveneffecten van rijden in de hoogste autosportklasse niet verkeerd volgens de Duitser. "Er zijn zeker veel leuke dingen die ik heb meegemaakt door het werk of door dat leven, maar het belangrijkste is dat ik het meest verliefd werd op het rijden."

      Ik hoorde dat iemand al het jaar: 2019, 2020 en 2021 al snel dat trofee pakt. Toevallig is dat naampje al in een filter. Zelf het woord 'filter' is niet in dat lijstje.

    De meeste coureurs staan daarin dan ook zeer stevig met hun beide benen op de grond. Het zijn vooral bepaalde fans die daar nogal eens schromelijk in overdrijven en dan met name de succesfans met hun meestal ook nog zeer gebrekkige kennis van zaken, maar ach dat is bij iedere sport zo.

    De salarissen die ze verdienen zijn alleen mogelijk door ze beroemd te maken en commercieel volledig uit te hollen. Natuurlijk zijn de coureurs in de F1 beroemdheden het is alleen maar net hoe ze daar zelf mee omgaan. Vettel doet het op zijn eigen bescheiden manier terwijl Hamilton juist weer graag op de rode loper staat.

    Natuurlijk zijn ze wel beroemd maar Seb geeft aan dat voor hem voornamelijk het rijden zelf telt.
    “Beroemd tegen wil en dank,” is een bekende uitspraak...

    Zijn het wereldsterren? Alleen de absolute toppers in hun hoogtijdagen in de F1.
    Zodra de prestaties minder worden verbleekt hun ster ook enigszins...
