CEO van Saoedische Grand Prix zeker van zijn zaak: "Voor honderd procent klaar"

Morgen draaien de heren coureurs voor het eerst het Jeddah Corniche Circuit op voor de vrije trainingen. Het was lang onzeker of de werkzaamheden omtrent het circuit wel op tijd klaar zouden zijn. De Grand Prix van Saoedi-Arabië debuteert immers op de Formule 1-kalender.

De Saoedi's zijn zelf zeer tevreden met het werk. Ze geven zelfs aan dat de baan helemaal af is. Martin Whitaker is de CEO van het evenement en is lovend. In de F1 Nation Podcast spreekt hij zich uit: "Het is voor honderd procent klaar. Ik kan mij niet herinneren dat er ooit een circuit zo snel is gebouwd. Het is extreem snel en ook heel krap."

Journalist Albert Fabrega is aanwezig in Jeddah en deelt op Twitter enkele foto's van de huidige staat van het circuit. Het is overduidelijk dat nog lang niet alles af is. Op de foto's is te zien dat er nog hard wordt geklust aan bijvoorbeeld tribunes en gastenverblijven.

Meedogenloos

Whitaker blijft echter onverminderd enthousiast over het Jeddah Corniche Circuit. In de podcast bespreekt hij de baan: "Het is echt enorm meedogenloos. Een klein foutje en je staat al in de muur. De topsnelheid zal ergens rond de 320, 330 kilometer per uur liggen bij het ingaan van de laatste bocht, bocht 27."

Dat de baan klaar is zal vast zo zijn. Ik hoop niet dat ze de tribunes afraffelen en je straks een drama krijgt ivm instorting...

  Ik ben anders ook benieuwd naar het asfalt er is nog nooit op gereden en de eerste laag is later gelegd dan onder normale omstandigheden is voorgeschreven. Het zou goed een fiasco kunnen worden met de grip aankomend weekend.

  Overal worden harde eisen gesteld aan de baan, komen ze vooraf alles 6x controleren en moet alles worden aangepast en hier lopen de bouwvakkers nog op de baan tijdens de race.

  qua snelheid wel, impact zou op zich mee kunnen vallen. We hebben dit jaar ook al Russell/Bottas gehad, Stroll en Verstappen in Baku, Verstappen in Copse en Norris in Spa. Denk dat sector 1 het grootste risico heeft op een harde klapper. De rest van het circuit krijg je misschien meer indycar crashes waar je mooi met de muur mee glijdt.

Dit klinkt een beetje als die minister destijds in Irak: "no, there are no American tanks in Bagdad", terwijl de Amerikaanse tanks zo ongeveer achter hem langs reden.

Withaker gaat echt niet zeggen "nee, we zijn er niet klaar voor" die liegt gewoon alsof het gedrukt staat. Hij weet precies het klappen van de zweep, hij was ook CEO van het Bahrain circuit en heeft in het verleden diverse klussen voor de FIA, Max Mosley en Bernie gedaan. Die heeft een netwerk en weet precies hoe het werkt.

Stiekem hoop ik dat ze eens goed op hun bek gaan met al het olie geld en lopen pochen hoe snel en fantastisch ze het allemaal voor elkaar krijgen.
We gaan het zien....
