Russell kritisch op Jeddah na incident-rijke race: "Blinde bochten zorgen voor onnodig gevaar"

De Saoedische Grand Prix van afgelopen weekend zat bomvol incidenten. De race kende twee rode vlaggen en beide werden veroorzaakt door vrije stevige crashes. Na de twee grote incidenten waren er nog meer kleine momentjes waardoor de baan vol lag met rotzooi.

Williams-coureur George Russell was betrokken bij de oorzaak van de tweede rode vlag. De Brit remde af toen Sergio Perez de muur raakte. Nikita Mazepin had echter niet door dat Russell vaart minderden en ramde hem vol vanachteren. Beide coureurs lagen uit de race en de baan was bezaaid met onderdelen.

Kritisch

Russell is kritisch op het circuit. Hij vraagt zich hardop af of het wel veilig is. Bij The Race is hij zeer fel: "Het leek erop dat het nogal onvermijdelijk was. Je gaat door bocht twee en dat is nogal een brede bocht. Auto's kunnen daar naast elkaar rijden maar dan wordt het een soort trechter en wordt het snel heel krap."

Onnodig

Toen Russell de bocht omkwam was het zeer druk en remde hij af om een incident te voorkomen. Mazepin kon dat niet zien en dat resulteerde in de flinke klapper. Het incident roept de nodige vragen op bij de Williams-coureur.

Russell denkt dat dit een leermoment is: "Ik denk dat de autosport veel kan leren dit weekend. Dit omdat het een spannende baan is om op te rijden maar er ontbreekt het een en ander op het gebied van veiligheid en racen. Er liggen hier gewoon onnodige incidenten op je te wachten. Al die kleine bochten zijn blind, het zijn niet eens bochten in een Formule 1-auto. Ze zorgen voor onnodig gevaar."

Op dit circuit valt nog wel een keer een dode, eigenlijk te gevaarlijk dit circuit, maar wel gaaf.

tja kritiek kan op het circuit kon niet uitblijven natuurlijk na zo'n chaotisch event.
Maar ik moet zeggen, lekker baantje, mooie toevoeging op de kalender !

  Klopt maar ik krijg langzaam het idee dat Russell een beetje een loser is en redelijk bang. Afgelopen week remde hij al compleet vroeg waardoor Mazepin achterop knalde. Er is nog geen een straat circuit race geweest waarbij George is opgevallen. Ook staat hij bij alles vooraan om het over veiligheid te gooien.

  Je weet dat Perez links stond en Russell rechts hé. Hij was de enige die afremde en bijna stilstond in dat gedeelte.

  Tja, met al die muurtjes, en met deze snelheden, is die kans wel een heel stuk groter dan op een normaal circuit in elk geval.

Ik vind die baan in Jeddah echt helemaal niks! Sowieso kijkt het niet fijn met die muren zo kort op het asfalt, maar het is ook nog eens levensgevaarlijk en er zijn weinig inhaalmogelijkheden. Een single lap ziet er spectaculair uit, maar voor de race is deze baan gewoon kut. Of iets netter gezegd: vagina.

Ik heb als kijker het hele weekend met een heel raar gevoel in mijn buik gezeten en dit was niet van een mexicaanse bonen schotel oid. Een baan als dit kan tijdens de Quali voor de rijders als een ware adrenaline rush werken, maar als het mis gaat op deze baan.. zijn de gevolgen niet te overzien. Ik deel dan ook de mening van velen, dat deze baan aangepast of verwijderd diend te worden. Je kan gewoon wachten op een dode.
