De Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi is op veel fronten een bijzondere wedstrijd. De titelstrijd zal worden beslist op het Yas Marina Circuit maar het is ook de voorlopige afscheidsrace van Honda. Ook race-icoon Kimi Räikkönen zal voor de laatste keer aan de start staan en dat valt veel fans zwaar.

De Finse Alfa Romeo-coureur is immers al jarenlang razend populair bij veel supporters. Räikkönen debuteerde in 2001 in de koningsklasse van de autosport en won in 2007 de wereldtitel. In de tussentijd bleef de Fin zijn gewone zelf en grossierde hij in gortdroge opmerkingen, ultrakorte antwoorden en iconische uitbarstingen op de boordradio.

Op de vooravond van zijn afscheid was Räikkönen te gast in de Beyond The Grid podcast. Hij reageert daar op een vraag over zijn grote populariteit: "Ik heb geen idee, misschien omdat ik altijd mijzelf ben gebleven. Je moet de fans vragen om naar deze podcast te komen om dat met hen 45 minuten lang te bespreken. Ik heb er geen antwoord op."

Herinneren

Hij geeft er dan ook geen zier hoe mensen hem later zullen herinneren. Hij is zichzelf: "Hoe ze dat zelf willen. Ik wil geen grenzen leggen op hoe ze mij moeten herinneren. Het maakt mij niet uit omdat ik in staat ben geweest om te doen wat ik mij wenste. Hoe ze mij ook herinneren ,goed of slecht, het is een herinnering en alles ik goed voor mij."

Kimi is altijd eerlijk. Geen media training, geen blad voor de mond, recht voor z'n raap zonder gemeen of agressief te worden. Durft gewoon eerlijk bij Top Gear toe te geven dat hij Ferrari nooit toestemming vroeg als hij in eigen land met sneeuw scooters ging racen in de winter

wel heel toevallig dat max zijn eerste overwinning heeft gewonnen door raikonnen achter zich te houden. nu hij aan zijn laatste wedstrijd van zijn carriere begint rijdt max de alles beslissende race om zijn eerste WK binnen te slepen. misschien een voorbode dat max de nieuwe kampioen gaat worden? laten we het hopen.
