Amerikaans McLaren-talent maakt overstap naar Britse Formule 4

Het team van McLaren kijkt al jaren naar de toekomst. Het team weet immers dat er een dag komt dat hun coureurs de sport gaan verlaten en er dan behoefte is aan nieuwe bloed. De Britse renstal heeft dan ook al jaren een redelijk succesvol opleidingsprogramma.

De opleidingsploeg heeft al enkele bekende coureurs voortgebracht, Lando Norris en Lewis Hamilton zaten immers allebei in het programma. Ook in 2021 rijden er enkele grote talenten rond in de opleiding. Het grootste talent is de piepjonge Amerikaan Ugo Ugochukwu. Hij staat nu op het punt om een belangrijke stap in zijn carrière te zetten.

Ugockukwu zal in 2022 namelijk zijn debuut gaan maken in de single seaters. Na enkele succesvolle jaren zegt hij zijn vertrouwde kart vaarwel. De piepjonge Amerikaan zal volgend jaar namelijk gaan rijden in de Britse Formule 4 voor het bekende team van Carlin. 

Norris

Met zijn move naar Carlin volgt Ugockukwu de voetsporen van McLaren-coureur Lando Norris. De Brit reed in zijn junior-jaren ook voor het team en werd met Carlin vice-kampioen in zijn laatste jaar in de Formule 2. De 14-jarige coureur krijgt volgend jaar om zich te bewijzen.

    Nu zijn de laatste jaren nou niet de grootste talenten in de Britse Formule 4 voortgebracht. Slechts 2018 was een goed jaar met Doohan en Hauger die mee deden. Maar die werden allebei om de oren gereden door de legendarische Kiern Jewiss.
    Maar buiten het feit dat het kampioenschap net zo goed het wereldkampioenschap kantklossen kon zijn, snap ik de keuze van McLaren wel om de jongen zoveel mogelijk in Engeland te houden en hem goed daarmee te kunnen begeleiden. Hopelijk vind hij zijn draai en is hij werkelijk het talent wat McLaren in hem ziet. Het is immers het eerste talent uit het Zak Brown tijdperk dat vanuit de karting wordt opgepikt.

      Mclaren heeft eigenlijk altijd een klein aantal in de talentenpool. Maar wat er lang blijft heeft het talent om in iedergeval betaald coureur te worden.

      Wordt het pad van F1 niks kan Zak nog altijd de road to indy proberen met deze knul.

      Zak heeft dat nog niet aangetoond tot nu toe vind ik. Ik heb ze niet allemaal op het netvlies. Maar naast Norris kan ik me er geen 1 herinneren die verder is gekomen namens McLaren. Het is juist Mercedes die er een paar heeft opgepikt van McLaren.

      En Norris werd niet in de karting opgepikt. Pas bij zijn switch van karting naar de autosport.
