In 2021 stonden er tijdens het seizoen 21 verschillende coureurs aan de start van de races. Nikita Mazepin eindigde als als allerlaatste in het kampioenschap. De Russische debutant pakte in zijn Haas geen enkel puntje en grossierde vooral in crashes, kritiek en scheldpartijen.

Al voor het seizoen kreeg Mazepin zeer veel kritiek. De Rus had zich in zijn opstapklasse-jaren al regelmatig op een negatieve manier bewezen. Hij duwde coureurs van de baan, sloeg een andere coureur en haalde nog meer bekritiseerde capriolen uit. Ook naast de baan haalde hij controversiële fratsen uit. Zo zou hij in een filmpje op social media een vrouw hebben betast. Hierdoor was hij al voor zijn debuut trending topic op Twitter, de hashtag #SayNoToMazepin ging de wereld over.

Mazespin

In zijn eerste Grand Prix in Bahrein maakte hij gelijk zijn status waar. In de eerste ronde reed Mazepin zijn Haas in de kreukels en kon hij gaan douchen. Er klonk hoongelach over de hele wereld en Mazepin kon niet bepaald sportief revanche nemen. Al snel doken er op YouTube-compilaties op waarin bijna het gehele startveld over de boordradio klaagde over Mazepin. Ook de onfortuinlijke schuivers bleven en hierdoor kreeg hij al snel de bijnaam ‘Mazespin’, een geuzennaam waar hij sportief mee omging.

Frustratie

Maar op de baan wilde het nog niet echt vlotten voor de Rus. Steeds meer en meer maakte hij een gefrustreerde indruk. In Zandvoort maakte hij tijdens de kwalificatie zelfs opzichtig ruzie met zijn teamgenoot Mick Schumacher. Het paste feilloos in het beeld van Mazepins seizoen. De Rus stond al voor de start met 1-0 achter en de frustraties groeiden alleen maar toen bleek dat hij die uitslag niet kon veranderen.

Hotelkamer

Vrijwel altijd reed hij achteraan en kwam hij zelfs niet meer in de buurt van Schumacher. In Qatar miste hij ook nog eens de training omdat zijn chassis beschadigd was geraakt. Eerder had zijn vader al diep in de buidel moeten tasten om ervoor te zorgen dat zijn zoon een nieuwe chassis kreeg. Mazepin en zijn teamgenoot hadden zoveel brokken gereden dat ze te horen kregen dat ze geen schade konden rijden bij de seizoensfinale in Abu Dhabi. Maar voor Mazepin maakte dat niets uit, hij testte positief op het coronavirus en sloot zijn rampzalige debuutjaar af op de hotelkamer.

Niet echt een genuanceerd verslag. Dat Mazepin niet tot de allergrootsten behoort, moge duidelijk zijn, maar heeft naast een aantal ongelukkige races ook een aantal degelijke weekends gekend. Dat mag ook worden benieuwd bij de beoordeling van een jonge debutant.

En dat gehak op zijn persoon vanwege het feit dat hij uit een rijke familie komt, vind ik ook erg gemakkelijk. Alsof ons Maxje geen miljonairszoon is. Dit is nu eenmaal een sport voor de lucky few.

Eerste Kerstdag is echt een dag om zo'n negatief artikel over een coureur te schrijven.
Nikita heeft tenminste zijn hele team een echt persoonlijk kerstcadeautje geschonken,
vanwege het feit dat hij geen afscheid kon nemen dit seizoen. Top gebaar!

  Als voorzitter van de Mazepin fanclub, kan ik zeggen dat Nikita meer betrokkenheid bij het team en haar personeel heeft getoond, dan de kroonprins. Het enige nadeel is dat mensen Nikita nog veroordelen voor hetgeen gebeurt is voorafgaand aan zijn Formule 1 carrière.

Zijn vader is diep in de buidel moeten tasten voor een nieuw chassis? Hopelijk is dat sarcastisch bedoeld, maar denk dat een nieuw chassis voor papa mazepin kopen is gelijk dat wij een brood halen bij de bakker.

Eerlijk gezegd had ik een hogere negatieve verwachting van Mazepin. Ik had verwacht dat hij vaker negatief in het nieuws zou komen door onbesuisde acties. Eerlijk is eerlijk, in dat ‘hok van een Haas’ ben je ook niets minder dan een rijdende chicane. Zelfs als Max achter het stuur zou zitten was een laatste of voorlaatste plek het best haalbare en punten slechts een droom. Ik vraag me af hoe lang Gene hier mee doorgaat. Laat pa Mazepin de toko daar kopen en een grote zal Roebels erin pompen. Dan wordt het misschien nog wat afentoe

Ik vind dit niet terecht. Nikita mag de naam hebben, maar hij heeft een beter seizoen gereden dan zijn teamgenoot. En eerlijk is eerlijk, die Haas was een baggerbak van heb ik jou daar. Zowel Mick als Nikita hebben zo’n beetje de moeilijkste auto gehad om in te moeten rijden, als rookies.

Als ik iemand op plek 21 zou zetten dit seizoen, dan is het Yuki Tsunoda wel.
