In 2021 stonden er tijdens het seizoen 21 verschillende coureurs aan de start van de races. Nicholas Latifi wist zeven punten te verzamelen en eindigde zijn 2021 op de zeventiende plaats van het kampioenschap. In tegenstelling tot zijn debuutjaar wist Latifi nu wel punten te scoren en speelde hij ook nog eens onbedoeld een hoofdrol.

De Canadese Williams-coureur leek een zwaar jaar voor de boeg te hebben. De meeste aandacht ging immers toch uit naar zijn teamgenoot George Russell en het plakkaat van paydriver kleefde aan hem. Toch liet hij meer dan eens zien een zeer degelijke coureur te zijn.

Punten

In de kwalificaties moest hij echter de witte vlag hijsen, Russell was bijna elke zaterdag veel sneller dan zijn teamgenoot. Toch was het Latifi die in eerste instantie de meeste punten binnen sleepte. In de bizarre Hongaarse Grand Prix kwam de Canadees als zevende over de lijn, één plekje voor zijn teamgenoot. Het feest was groot, Williams had eindelijk weer punten gescoord. In de ‘race’ op Spa wist Latifi weer in de punten te eindigen. In het waterballet achter de safety car kwam hij als negende over de lijn, ver achter zijn teamgenoot.

Russell

Na het Belgisch waterballet kwam Latifi niet meer in de buurt van de punten. Alleen in Italië kwam hij in de buurt met een elfde plaats. Verder reed de Canadees alleraardigst mee in het veld maar de meeste aandacht bleef uitgaan naar zijn teamgenoot George Russell.

Titelbeslisser

Dit veranderde echter compleet tijdens de seizoensfinale in Abu Dhabi. Latifi kende een wat tegenvallende race op het Yas Marina Circuit. Na een duel met Mick Schumacher ging hij wat wijd en bevuilde hij zijn banden. Latifi crashte en hierdoor kwam er in de absolute slotfase nog een safety car de baan op. Hierdoor kon Max Verstappen in de laatste ronde de titel pakken.

Rug rechten

Latifi kreeg in de weken na de race bakken met online-haatreacties over zich heen. Hij sprak zich zeer krachtig uit en bewees dat hij zeker zijn rug recht kan houden in moeilijke situaties. Het incident overschaduwde echter zijn zeer degelijke seizoen en dat is heel erg jammer. Latifi liet immers soms zien wel degelijk een prima coureur te zijn.
