De 21 van 2021: Puntenpakker in de anonimiteit

In 2021 stonden er tijdens het seizoen 21 verschillende coureurs aan de start van de races. Lance Stroll eindigde als dertiende en wist dit jaar in totaal 34 punten bij elkaar te sprokkelen. Hij kreeg dit jaar te maken met een viervoudig wereldkampioen als teamgenoot maar eindigde slechts één plekje achter hem in de eindrankschikking.

Stroll is het etiket van jonge hond inmiddels al weer geruime tijd ontgroeid. Wel keer zijn loopbaan dit jaar een compleet nieuwe wending: zijn vader (en teameigenaar) kocht het automerk Aston Martin en gaf zijn Formule 1-team gelijk ook die naam. Stroll was nu de coureur van een iconisch automerk en kreeg daarnaast ook nog even te maken met viervoudig wereldkampioen Sebastian Vettel als teamgenoot.

Graadmeter

Vettel bevindt zich echter al een aantal jaren in een vormdip en dus was hij de ideale graadmeter voor Stroll. De Canadees begon het seizoen in ieder geval keurig, in de eerste twee races pakte hij gelijk een handje punten. In Imola werd hij zelfs achtste terwijl zijn teamgenoot geen enkel punt scoorde. Stroll leek uit te groeien tot de kopman maar kreeg in Monaco de eerste tik om zijn oren. De fans thuis ergerde zich vooral toen een foutje van hem op een onhandig moment werd herhaald door de lokale regisseur.

Vetpot

In Azerbeidzjan kreeg hij weer de nodige airtime. Hij kreeg een klapband op het rechte stuk en vloog op angstaanjagende wijze in de muur. Hij stapte ongedeerd uit en zag Vettel naar het podium rijden. Daarna nam hij sportief revanche en reed hij twee keer op rij in de punten. Het waren echter geen dikke punten, een tiende en achtste plaats zijn geen grote vetpot.

Concurrentie

Dat was het verhaal van het jaar voor Stroll, hij eindigde wel in de punten maar het waren nooit enorm veel punten. Hij deed het zeker niet onaardig, maar met een zesde plaats als beste resultaat kom je niet ver in een seizoen waar de concurrentie soms kan verrassen met een podiumplaats. Stroll is dan ook de hoogst genoteerde coureur zonder een podiumplek en dat zegt genoeg.

Positief

2021 was zeker geen slecht jaar voor de Canadees maar hij kan altijd beter en dat is altijd iets positiefs. Eigenlijk kan 2022 alleen maar beter gaan voor Stroll, de nieuwe regels kunnen zomaar in zijn voordeel gaan werken. Maar als hij dan succesvol wil zijn moet hij wel af van de achtste en tiende plaatsen.

"Stroll was nu de coureur van een iconisch automerk" , pfffff, dat doet Lawrence ons graag geloven maar in werkelijkheid is de situatie zo'n beetje het zelfde als die bij Alfa Romeo, daar zeggen we ook niet dat Kimi bij een iconisch automerk reed. Aston Martin is niet meer dan een (hele dure) sticker op de achtervleugel zoals hij jaren op de achtervleugel van RB zat.

Ik vond t geen gek jaar van Stroll. Sochi was er even een waas, maar kan me nou niet herinneren dat hij hele slechte races reed. Vooral de zaterdag is zijn probleem.

Geef hem een alternatieve strategie en het eindigt toch vaak in de punten. T zijn er dan niet heel veel, maar t zijn punten.

  Hij mag van geluk spreken dat niemand zijn domme klapper in Hongarije gezien heeft, toen hij vol achterin een Alpine dreigde te rijden en dan maar over het gras tegen Leclerc aanvloog, en nog een Mclaren meenam. Maar iedereen keek op dat moment naar kegelbal Bottas, dus dat was geluk hebben
  
  Stroll zal helaas altijd het probleem hebben dat Stroll Senior hem zo graag meer wil laten zijn dan alleen F1 rijder. Stroll Senior wil zijn zoon als WK in zijn team hebben. Mocht Lewis bv ooit stoppen dan gaat hij proberen zoveel mogelijk personeel weg te halen naar Aston Martin of zelfs het hele team op te kopen. En soms doet Lance ook iets goeds met het AM materiaal, maar het moet niet soms goed het moet ALTIJD goed zijn. En dat lukt nog steeds niet

  Stroll kan net meekomen met de rest maar mist absoluut het niveau om een seizoen lang echt te kunnen presteren. Mist (race)intelligentie , kan niet bijdragen aan het ontwikkelen van de auto. Was allang weg als hij niet de zoon van was...
