Schumacher bedankt zijn engineers: "Zoveel geleerd als coureur en persoon"

Mick Schumacher debuteerde afgelopen seizoen in de Formule 1 bij het team van Haas. Het was overduidelijk dat de jonge Duitser zijn plek nog moest vinden maar de samenwerking met het team verliep tenminste wel goed. Hij maakte veel foutjes en werd met enige regelmaat gerustgesteld door zijn engineer.

De zoon van de legendarische Michael Schumacher kende dan ook een seizoen vol met ups en downs. Zijn vele crashes waren onhandig en onnodig maar daar tegenover stonden ook wat hoge ups. Hij bereikte een enkele keer Q2 en vooral de samenwerking met zijn team liep gesmeerd.

Comfortabel

Hij is dan ook vol lof over zijn engineers. Hij prijst zijn teamgenoten de hemel in. Tegenover Speedweek is hij duidelijk: "Zij zijn de reden dat ik mij zo comfortabel voel, ze zijn de reden dat racen in de Formule 1 als een tweede natuur voelt. Daarnaast heb ik als coureur en persoon zoveel geleerd en dat allemaal dankzij hen."

Jordan

Toch ziet Schumacher die samenwerking niet als het absolute hoogtepunt van het jaar. Hij mocht immers ook een rondje rijden in de Jordan waar zijn vader in debuteerde. Dat maakte veel indruk: "Ik kan mij niet voorstellen hoe fantastisch het moet zijn geweest om in die auto te racen tegen andere legendarische coureurs. Breng die atmosferische motoren terug!"
