McLaren denkt na over inzetten O'Ward voor vrije training

Pato O'Ward mocht ter ere van zijn eerste IndyCar-zege in een F1-wagen van McLaren rijden. Afgelopen december tijdens de testdagen in Abu Dhabi was het zover en de Mexicaan maakte indruk op McLaren CEO Zak Brown. De kans is hierdoor aanwezig dat O'Ward ook instapt tijdens een vrije training in 2022.

"Ik denk dat elke keer dat je een coureur in je Formule 1-auto zet met zo weinig testdagen en rookie-dagen dat je er alleen iemand in stopt, waardoor het een zinvolle test wordt", zegt Brown tegen Racer.com. "Het was een leuke kleine beloning, maar we zouden hem alleen in de auto zetten om ook te zien hoe capabel hij is om een Formule 1-auto te besturen."

O'Ward stelde Brown na zijn eerste meters in de Formule 1 niet teleur. "Hij deed alles wat we van hem wilden en van hem verwachtten. Hij was extreem snel, maar dat verbaasde ons niet. Dus we waren meer op zoek om te zien hoe hij zich aanpast? Hoe is zijn feedback? En dat alles, voor zijn eerste run in de Formule 1-auto, was overtuigend."

In 2022 zijn alle F1-teams verplicht om een aantal keer een rookie inzetten tijdens de eerste vrije training. O'Ward staat op de shortlist als een van de kandidaten en teambaas Andreas Seidl heeft hierin een belangrijke stem. "We moeten volgend jaar twee VT1's draaien", zei Brown. “Uiteindelijk is het eerst en vooral aan Andreas om een aanbeveling te doen en een standpunt in te nemen – waarvan ik, in de twee jaar dat Andreas en ik samenwerken, altijd instemde met zijn aanbevelingen en suggesties. We zullen een volledige analyse doen - er moeten nog wat rookie-tests worden gedaan, dus stap voor stap, maar een zeer goede eerste stap."

Pato O'Ward is ook in 2022 te zien in de IndyCar. De Mexicaan rijdt opnieuw voor Arrow McLaren SP. In 2021 scoorde O'Ward twee overwinningen in de hoogste Amerikaanse autosportklasse.

Toppertje hoor die O'ward. Als Ric komend seizoen weer matig presteert, kan hij zomaar de kans krijgen. F1 is superpopulair in Mexico, dus het zou me niks verbazen.

  Nicos@ idd. Die twee komen niet in hetzelfde team. Die twee hebben meer hekel aan elkaar dan vermeend wordt tussen Hamilton en Verstappen. Die twee kijken elkaar niet aan en lopen met bogen om elkaar heen.
