Vettel leeft mee met Bottas: "Jammer dat hij Mercedes moet verlaten"

Valtteri Bottas is zich aan het opladen voor zijn nieuwe Formule 1-avontuur. De Fin rijdt vanaf aankomend seizoen voor het team van Alfa Romeo. De afgelopen jaren reed Bottas nog voor het topteam van Mercedes maar daar moest hij genoegen nemen met een bijrol naast Lewis Hamilton. Hij kreeg geen contractverlenging en wordt dit jaar vervangen door George Russell.

De resultaten van Bottas waren afgelopen seizoen niet om over naar huis te schrijven. De Fin kon zijn teamgenoot Hamilton meestal niet helpen en zijn vertrek was dan ook geen verrassing. Toch was de teleurstelling aanwezig, Bottas had immers jarenlang keurig zijn werk gedaan. Mercedes nam op respectvolle wijze afscheid van Bottas maar heeft hem wel de deur gewezen.

Jammer

Aston Martin-coureur Sebastian Vettel vindt het jammer dat Bottas is vertrokken. De meelevende Duitser vindt Bottas op én naast de baan een toffe peer. In gesprek met het Zwitserse Blick spreekt hij zich uit: "Op een bepaalde manier vindt ik het jammer dat hij Mercedes moet verlaten. Maar misschien passen de nieuwe regels van 2022 bij zijn nieuwe team. Dan is alles misschien eindelijk wat meer gebalanceerd en heeft hij meer kans."

Snelste coureurs

De vriendelijke Vettel is over het algemeen heel erg positief over Bottas. De viervoudig wereldkampioen kan het dan ook niet laten om even wat complimentjes uit te delen. Vettel is zeer lovend over zijn Finse collega: "Valtteri is recht door zee en één van de meeste eerlijke coureurs die ik ken. Maar hij is bovenal één van de snelste coureurs van het veld."

Het zal waarschijnlijk voor Bottas eenzelfde soort van opluchting geven het voor Vettel was.
Beiden zullen van zichzelf al wel door hebben dat ze net niet goed genoeg meer zijn voor een topteam.

  Vettel en Bottas, van hetzelfde laken een pak. Beide sympathieke jongens, wellicht soms te sympathiek. Beiden hebben hun teamgenoten om de oren gekregen. Bottas zelfs jaren aan een stuk.
  Net als Vettel gaat ook Bottas zijn geluk nu beproeven bij een B team.
  Ik verwacht er niet te veel meer van.
  In de middenmoot is het keihard knokken geblazen, en dat is niet Bottas zijn sterkste kant

  Vettel is 4x wk bottas 0x denk dat vettel wel bewezen heeft dat als hij op het goede moment op de goede plek zit zeker kan leveren. Sterker nog als vettel in 2014 bij mercedes had gereden ipv lewis was hij 10x wk. Ik denk wel dat als lewis en vettel in 1 team zouden zitten lewis wint. Ik vind lewis beter als vettel dat dan weer wel

Bottas zei 3 GP.s geleden al dat hij blij zou zijn als de laatste GP erop zat, dat zag je wel toen hij het zwembad in dook na de laatste race.

Die is blij dat hij bij alfa kan gaan beginnen, waar hij een meerjarig contract heeft getekend.
