Räikkönen geeft toe: "Weet dat ik beter was toen ik wat jonger was"

Kimi Räikkönen ging afgelopen seizoen met race-pensioen. De ervaren Fin hing zijn helm aan de wilgen na een ellenlange loopbaan in de koningsklasse van de autosport. De enkelvoudig wereldkampioen kende enkele mindere seizoenen in de staart van zijn carrière. Hij kwam in zijn Alfa Romeo regelmatig niet verder dan de staart van het middenveld.

Er was dan ook soms kritiek op de kunsten van de Fin. Hij was overduidelijk zijn snelheid verloren en viel in de kwalificatie vaak al vrij vroeg af. Hij leek de glans te zijn verloren maar was nog steeds zeer populair. Räikkönen zelf zag ook wel dat hij wat langzamer was. In gesprek met The Race geeft hij dat eerlijk toe: "Ik weet zeker dat ik beter was toen ik jonger was dan ik nu ben."

Vooral Räikkönens kwalificaties vielen vaak zeer erg tegen. In de races kwam hij regelmatig nog wel uit de verf maar moest hij zeer veel inhaalraces rijden. Hij is ook hier goudeerlijk over: "Ik race nog steeds best wel aardig. Maar ik weet zeker dat ik vroeger beter was in de kwalificatie dan nu. Maar dat had ik ook wel verwacht hoor."
