Russell regeert over eigen graf: "Hij was nogal duidelijk over Alex"

Alexander Albon maakt aankomend seizoen zijn comeback in de Formule 1. De Britse Thai volgt George Russell op bij Williams nadat hij een jaar aan de zijlijn stond bij Red Bull Racing. Het is een redelijk opvallende move aangezien Williams met Mercedesmotoren rijdt en Albon een Red Bull-man is.

Russell werd vrij vroeg aangekondigd als Mercedes-coureur voor 2022 en dus moest Williams op zoek naar een oplossing. Red Bull wilde maar wat graag Albon weer in de Formule 1 zien dus was één plus één twee. Het leek allemaal wat lastig te worden ,Mercedes was immers niet blij met een Red Bull-coureur, maar uiteindelijk verliep alles toch redelijk vlotjes.

Russell

Volgens Williams-teambaas Jost Capito heeft George Russell bijgedragen aan de komst van Albon. In gesprek met Formel1.de legt Capito het uit: "Ik heb veel met George gesproken. We hebben het ook over rijders gehad. Dat is logisch aangezien hij een prominente rol had binnen het team. Ik heb daarnaast ook een vriendschappelijke band met hem. Dat is ook de reden dat ik hem heb gevraagd naar zijn mening over enkele coureurs. Hij was nogal duidelijk over Alex."

Niet moeilijk

Mercedes was er dus niet zo happy mee maar volgens Capito gaat de Duitse renstal niet over de keuze van de coureurs van Williams. Hij geeft zelfs aan dat de komst van Albon simpel verliep: "Ik heb de meeste dingen met Horner besproken. Red Bull wilde graag dat Alex een plekje zou vinden. De onderhandelingen waren daarom ook niet zo heel moeilijk."

  Nick is een Mercedes man en dus potentieel gevaarlijk voor de plek van Russel. Stel dat de Vries het geweldig doet bij Williams en Russel word opgerold door Lewis dan is er voor George altijd het risico dat Mercedes een Red Bulletje doet en snel switched. Met Nick naast de zijlijn is er net wat minder makkelijk een alternatief voor Russel. Overigens verwacht ik dat Russel het goed gaat doen bij Mercedes en Lewis er niet zomaar gehakt van maakt.
