Verloren jaar dreigt voor titelveelvraat Oscar Piastri: "Teleurstellend"

Oscar Piastri moet komend seizoen noodgedwongen toekijken vanaf de reservebank. De jonge Australiër reeg de voorbije jaren de titels aaneen en kroonde zich in 2021 verrassend - als debutant - tot kampioen in de Formule 2. Die titel in het voorportaal van de Formule 1 bleek echter vooralsnog niet voldoende om hem een racestoeltje in de koningsklasse van de autosport op te leveren.

Piastri fungeert in 2022 als test- en reserverijder van Alpine. Bij dat team maakt hij ook onderdeel uit van het ontwikkelingsprogramma, maar drie titels in drie verschillende opstapklasses in drie opeenvolgende jaren waren niet genoeg om hem te promoveren tot Formule 1-coureur. Alpine besloot in een vroeg stadium om de line-up met Fernando Alonso en Esteban Ocon intact te houden.

Een bittere pil voor Piastri. In de Formule 2 mag hij na zijn titel niet meer racen en geen van de andere Formule 1-teams hapte toe. Zodoende is een van de meest veelbelovende talenten van de voorbije jaren veroordeeld tot een rol achter de schermen. Een verloren jaar dreigt, want in tegenstelling tot vroeger komen testcoureurs tegenwoordig niet veel meer in actie.

Misschien mag Piastri een van de weinige testdagen voor zijn rekening nemen, maar gezien de ingrijpend gewijzigde reglementen is dat onwaarschijnlijk. Mogelijk kan hij nog een enkele keer instappen voor een vrijdagtraining bij een Grand Prix-training. Verder is het behelpen met simulatorsessies en meekijken over de schouders van Alonso en Ocon.

De vraag is of dat zijn ontwikkeling ten goede komt of juist remt. Oud Formule 1-coureur Mark Webber staat Piastri bij en verwacht dat het talent in 2023 wel de stap naar de Formule 1 zal maken. Zelf doet de Formule 2-kampioen weinig moeite om te verhullen dat hij terneergeslagen is. "Natuurlijk ben ik een beetje teleurgesteld. Ik denk namelijk dat ik, gezien mijn prestaties, zeker een plekje op de grid had verdiend", aldus Piastri tegenover SpeedWeek.com.

jammer dat de F2 kampioen niet eenmaal de kans krijgt om zijn titel te verdedigen, nu loopt zo iemand het risico een jaar later al uit beeld te zijn...

  Eens, dit is m.i. een mankement in het reglement.
  
  Wellicht zou een F2-kampioen nog maximaal twee jaar in de F2 moeten kunnen blijven zelfs, met als restrictie dat hij ondertussen niet ouder wordt dan (bijvoorbeeld) 24 jaar.
  
  Dan voorkom je ook dat een talent op jonge leeftijd al F2-kampioen wordt maar dat F1-teams hem vervolgens te jong vindt om hem een stoeltje te geven...

  Kleine teams die het moeilijk hebben, kiezen liever voor rijders met veel sponsorgeld. Lance heeft zelfs geen F2 gereden en kijk... Hoe moeilijk kan het zijn om F2 kampioenen niet te parkeren.

Ik pleit voor een F1 team vanuit Liberty Media of de FIA waar de Formule 2 kampioen 2 jaar mag rijden. Wanneer deze kampioen al elders aan de slag mag, dan de nr.2 o.i.d.

  Dat idee had ik ook. Gewoon standaard de hoogst genoteerde F2 rijder zonder zitje een jaar mee laten racen in de F1. Moet toch te financieren zijn voor Liberty / FIA. Misschien ook nog een stoeltje via een Amerikaans/Aziatisch kampioenschap beschikbaar stellen, heb je een mooi team.

  Mooi idee natuurlijk maar dan moet er wel een verdienmodel voor liberty media zijn denk ik. Een f1 seizoen kost snel 100 miljoen en dan een top team met het pareltje weglopen als het er een is. Lijkt mij niet heel aantrekkelijk voor liberty media

Timing sucks voor Piastri. Vastgeketend aan een Constructeur zonder satelliet team. Doodzonde. Misschien toch eens gaan babbelen met RB of Ferrari, want dit is wel een talent

De wens dat alleen de grootste talenten de F1 zouden mogen bereiken is natuurlijk niet echt realistisch in een miljoenen verslindende sport als deze met een zeer beperkt aantal zitjes.

Vroeger, best lang geleden alweer, werd er ongelimiteerd getest en konden jonge coureurs veel ervaring opdoen. Tegenwoordig kan niks meer, ja alleen op de simulator. We hebben de F1 dusdanig duur en exclusief gemaakt dat de huidige F1 auto's bijna alleen nog maar in Grand Prix weekenden mogen rijden. Heel jammer eigenlijk, denk nog graag terug aan de F1 demo's op Zandvoort: Arrows 1996, Williams 1999, Arrows 2000, Ferrari 1999 etc etc. Ze reden toen allemaal met de huidige auto's van dat seizoen hun rondjes. Een waar spektakel.

Hoe doen ze dat bij de indycars? Op 1 of andere manier heb je daar toch een stoelgarantie als je kampioen in de indylight wordt?

  De winnaar krijgt geld in de opstapklasses om te investeren in een zitje in een klasse hoger. Geen idee hoe hoog de bedragen zijn, maar zeker niet voldoende om een zitje in F1 te kopen.
