Vettel roept Formule 1 op: "Mentale gezondheid net zo belangrijk als fysieke gezondheid"

Het is algemeen bekend dat de heren coureurs in de Formule 1 onder zeer grote druk moeten presteren. Dat betekent dat ze nogal stevig in hun schoenen moeten staan. Niet alleen rust er de druk van een team op hun schouders, thuis kijken er ook miljoenen mensen mee en die hebben ook allemaal een mening.

Het is dan ook belangrijk dat de coureurs op mentaal vlak ook zeer sterk zijn. In de tijd waarin de wereld zich nu bevindt worden mentale issues steeds meer en meer besproken. Viervoudig wereldkampioen Sebastian Vettel is van mening dat dit ook in de Formule 1 meer bespreekbaar moet worden gemaakt. De Aston Martin-man wordt geciteerd door Speedweek: "Ik denk dat mentale gezondheid net zo belangrijk ,zo niet nog belangrijker, is dan de fysieke gezondheid."

Vettel ,die zich steeds vaker op maatschappelijk vlak uitspreekt, denkt dat de Formule 1 ook op dit gebied nog wat werk voor de boeg heeft. De Duitser schetst het probleem nog maar eens: "Als je je been breekt of ergens pijn hebt, dan vinden we het allemaal heel erg normaal dat je naar de dokter moet gaan. Maar dat denken we nog niet als het gaat over iemands mentale gezondheid."

    Komop zeg, als je niet van jezelf mentaal sterk bent en om kan gaan met tegenslagen ben je geen topsporter. Zeker de F1 mannen hebben ook nog eens voldoende fondsen om daarbij nog wat extra ondersteuning en advies in te huren. Geen idee waarom hij een probleem aansnijdt wat helemaal niet echt een issue is. Degene met mentale problemen vindt t vaak lastig om erover te praten terwijl de omgeving het doorgaans prima accepteert en steun kan bieden als er wat loos is volgens mij.
    Dus Seb, mental issues?

      spot on. Van F1 coureurs, zeker de dikbetaalde kampioenen / ex kampioenen mag je wel een tikje meer mentale weerbaarheid verwachten dan van de normale sterveling.
      Dat gezegd hebbende, het zijn natuurlijk mensen bij wie het ook wel eens niet lekker in het koppie kan zitten.
      Maar dan ga ik er gemakshalve vanuit dat ze daar, net als ieder ander, hulp voor zoeken indien nodig.
      Dus net als jij vraag ik me ook af waarom Seb dit probleem, wat geen echt probleem is, onder de aandacht meent te moeten brengen.

      Honestly.... @alflonzo...

      Hele aardige gast die Vettel, maar mentaal niet de sterkste. Vroeger zeker veel gejammer over de radio en ik ben Baku 2017 niet vergeten toen hij Hamilton expres toucheerde. Wat ook weer genieten was. ;-)

      @theStijg: vervloekt heb ik m! (Baku)
      Ik was er nooit erg happy mee dat hij naar SF kwam maar gaf m het voordeel van de twijfel. Maar al vrij snel bevestigde hij mijn vermoedens.
      Echt een sympathieke vent verder, ik denk dat het een goede sociaal werker zou zijn bijvoorbeeld.

      @Jimmy, idd ook sporters hebben weleens een mindere tijd, maar zoals gezegd kan men makkelijk hulp krijgen. En ook nog eens van het hoogste niveau want geld is geen probleem. Mi idd een non-issue en al helemaal geen taboe

    Ik weet heel goed hoe zwaar mensen het kunnen hebben met geestelijke gezondheidsklachten. Maar die mensen komen helemaal niet in de buurt van de top in de wereld. Mensen op zeer hoog podiums en functies zijn in het algemeen sterke mensen. Als ze dan even wat tegenslag krijgen gaan er sommige klagen over geestelijke gezondheid. Eerlijk gezegt denk ik dat die mensen zich misschien niet zo prettig voelen, maar echt geestelijke gezondheidsklachten zijn wat anders. Ik ken mensen met zeer depressieve klachten, hyperventilatie, emotieregulatie problemen, paniekaanvallen, slapeloosheid, lusteloosheid, of zelfs suïcidale ideeën hebben. Dat zijn pas echt geestelijke gezondheidsproblemen.

    Het klopt dat Vettel zegt dat lichamelijk letsel meteen opvalt en begrepen word. Het klopt dat geestelijke gezondheidsklachten vaker met een korrel zout genomen worden, of helemaal niet serieus genomen worden. En compleet genegeerd en als aanstellerij gezien word. Dit is weliswaar echt een probleem. Geestelijke gezondheid is net zo belangrijk als lichamelijke gezondheid. Hier mag men in t algemeen wel serieuzer en voorzichtiger mee omgaan.

    Wat ik hekel is dat sommige mensen zich voordoen alsof ze het zo zwaar hebben. Ik hekel smoesjes of aanstellerij. Als je F1 kunt rijden en gewoon met media om kunt gaan, dan heb je geen problemen met geestelijke gezondheid. Sorry.
