Williams-kopstuk vergelijkt Russell: "Hij zit tussen Lewis en Jenson in"

Aankomend seizoen wordt het jaar van de waarheid voor George Russell. De jonge Brit heeft immers de overstap gemaakt naar het topteam van Mercedes. Hij zal zich daar moeten bewijzen naast zijn nieuwe teamgenoot: zevenvoudig wereldkampioen Lewis Hamilton. Men ziet in ieder geval veel in Russells kunnen.

Russell maakte afgelopen jaren al een prima indruk bij het team van Williams. Met enige regelmaat steeg hij boven zichzelf uit en deed het onmogelijke dingen in de Britse bolide. Hij kan de volgende Britse wereldkampioen worden en zo de derde Brit met de wereldtitel worden in deze eeuw. Eerder wonnen Jenson Button en Lewis Hamilton immers al titels in de afgelopen eeuw.

Williams-kopstuk Dave Robson heeft met alle drie de heren gewerkt en weet dan ook hoe goed Russell daadwerkelijk is. Hij spreekt zich uit in gesprek met Motorsport.com: "Ik denk dat Jenson en Lewis qua rijstijl nogal anders waren en George is dan ook weer iets anders. Hij hangt een beetje tussen die twee in. Top op een bepaalde hoogte hangt het af van het bandengebruik en die zijn anders geworden. Ik weet dus niet hoe de rijstijl van Lewis nu is."

Talent

Robson heeft in ieder geval veel vertrouwen in Russell. Zijn voormalig oogappel zal zijn plek moeten vinden bij Mercedes maar de Williams-man denkt dat dit gaat lukken: "Het is voor George het belangrijkste dat hij zich weet aan te passen. Normaliter rijdt hij vrij instinctief en ik denk dat hij zich zal blijven verbeteren. Hij heeft namelijk het talent in huis."

Bepaald geen compliment om met Button 'vergeleken' te worden!

Ik schat Russell toch wel een paar klasse hoger in (als coureur, want hij lijkt wel erg in het staatje van MB te praten de laatste maanden).

  Gewaagde uitspraak om Button en Alonso zo te vergelijken.
  
  Idd heeft Button Alonso in 2015 met 5 punten verslagen (Alonso met meer uitvalbeurten en een wedstrijd minder).
  Het jaar daarna heeft Alonso hem weliswaar verpletterd in de eindstand.
  Geloof niet dat iemand Button qua kwaliteiten durft te vergelijken met Alonso, maar respect dat jij dat wel durft!!
  
  En dat ie Hamilton heeft verslagen zegt meer over de kwaliteit van Hamilton volgens mij!! ;-)

Russell heeft wel de charisma en de snelheid om een grote te worden.
En wellicht kan hij dit komend seizoen al laten zien door een gooit te doen naar het wk.
Dan wel het seizoen daarna als Lewis stopt.

  Charisma? Dan ben ik wel benieuwd wat je daaronder verstaat. Snelheid heeft hij zeker, vooral op zaterdag, maar qua race-craft moet ook nog maar blijken hoever hij al is. Die ene race die hij inviel voor Lewis is niet maatgevend, al liet hij toen wel zien over groot aanpassingsvermogen te beschikken.
  
  Ik hoop vooral dat hij geen tamme Wolff wordt, eigenlijk...
